Fort DuPont State Park

Fort DuPont State Park Fort DuPont State Park, located in Delaware City, DE, is home to the former military post of the same name. The State Park is open from 8am to Sunset

Fort DuPont State Park is open from 8am to Sunset year round. The park office is located at GrassDale Center, and is open from 8-4 Monday to Friday (closed on Holidays). Vehicle Entry fee is in effect from March to November and self-registration envelopes are available at the GrassDale parking area and the Fishing Point Parking area (at the end of Wilmington Ave)

Today we share one of the most sensational stories from Fort DuPont's history. When the long-range rifled guns were being proof fired in 1902, some of the dummy rounds ended up in Salem, New Jersey! The Army had to put together a report on the damage, which you can see.

The farmer, William Reeve, whose land was affected, called the fire department to remove the round. They set the dummy round up in front of their fire station, and locals would occasionally pose with it for photos!

For most of the World War II period, Fort DuPont had a monthly soldier newspaper called the Fort DuPont "Flashes." These newspapers are full of interesting anecdotes about life at the fort. Throughout the rest of this winter, we are going to periodically post clippings from the "Flashes."
