🎒🚲 Back to school means more students on the move, so let’s talk e-bikes.

As students head back to school, e-bikes are becoming a popular way to get around Delaware. But whether you're a student, a parent, or just sharing the road with them, it’s important to know the rules.

Not all e-bikes are the same, and where you can ride depends on what class of e-bike you have.

Here are a few rules to know:

🚲 Class 1 & 2: Can use shared-use and bicycle paths, but the maximum speed is 10 mph. On sidewalks, the motor must be turned OFF and riders must yield to pedestrians.

🚲 Class 3: Riders must be 16 or older, wear an approved helmet and have a speedometer. Class 3 e-bikes are not permitted on sidewalks, bicycle paths or shared-use paths.

🚫 No pedals? If your "e-bike" doesn't have pedals, it may actually be considered a motorcycle. Motorcycles aren't permitted on sidewalks or bike paths, and a driver's license is required.

🏙️ Downtown: Bicycles and e-bikes cannot be ridden on sidewalks within Delaware's designated Downtown No-Riding Area. Dismount and walk your bike through the area.

🌳 Trails: E-bikes are prohibited on natural-surface, hiking, mountain bike, equestrian and other trails designated for non-motorized use.

And regardless of what you're riding: slow down, yield to pedestrians, follow traffic laws and wear a helmet.

Parents: this is a good time to have a quick conversation with your student about where they can ride and the rules that apply to their e-bike. A few minutes now can help keep everyone safe once school is back in session.

👏👏👏Last week, the City of Delaware celebrated a major milestone as PPG officially broke ground on a $280 million expansion at its Delaware manufacturing facility.

Mayor Carolyn Kay Riggle was honored to represent the City at the groundbreaking, speak to those gathered and, perhaps most importantly, wield an official groundbreaking shovel. This is a huge investment in Delaware.

PPG’s expansion will add a new 100,000-square-foot advanced manufacturing facility, create 100 new full-time jobs, and strengthen Delaware’s role in advanced manufacturing and automotive innovation. Construction is expected to begin this year, with operations projected to launch in 2028.

And this investment wasn’t a given.

Delaware was one of three finalists competing for this project against other PPG locations, including facilities outside the United States. The fact that PPG chose to invest here is a tremendous vote of confidence in our workforce, our infrastructure, our business community and the future of Delaware.

PPG has been part of Delaware for more than 60 years and currently employs approximately 450 people in our community. This expansion builds on that legacy while creating new opportunities for the next generation of workers and families.

A tremendous amount of work went into making this project happen. We want to recognize Nic Langford and the City of Delaware Economic Development team, along with our regional and state partners, for helping demonstrate why Delaware is a great place to do business and grow.

When a global company chooses Delaware for a $280 million investment, that says something.

🏃 Run Delaware’s historic Northwest neighborhood!

Looking for a fun way to finish out the summer? The Lincoln Mile is this Saturday, August 15 and you can still sign up! Heats start at 6pm. The quick 1-mile run features a fast, scenic course through Delaware’s historic Northwest neighborhood and a downhill finish into Mingo Park.

Starting near the Delaware Hayes High School tennis courts on Lincoln Avenue, runners will head through the neighborhood with plenty of spectators cheering them on before making the final downhill stretch into the park.

There’s a race for just about everyone:

🏃‍♀️ High School Challenge Mile – A great tune-up before cross country season, with team scoring for groups of three or more.

🏃 Community Mile – Open to everyone. Whether you're a seasoned runner or just want to see what you can do over a mile, this one is for you.

🏃‍♀️🏃 Elite Women’s & Men’s Miles – Separate heats for some of the fastest runners around, with prize money for the top four finishers in each race.

The Community Mile suggests a minimum age of 7, while the High School Challenge is open to athletes ages 13-18.

🏁 Multiple heats throughout the evening
💰 Elite races offer cash prizes

Come run it, cheer from the sidelines, or just enjoy watching some seriously fast feet fly downhill into Mingo Park.
