Yesterday, we honored the legacy of former Commissioner Merlin “Boots” Sheets, who passed away in February. His lifetime of dedicated service and leadership can still be seen in several projects he championed from 1980 to 1996, including the establishment of a state-of-the-art 911 center, the formation of a four-county solid waste district, and the planning and construction of key sewer infrastructure throughout Delaware County.

The Commissioners presented a proclamation to Shad, his son, and Sherryl, his daughter, during session on Monday. They were joined by Dedra Hall, who served as clerk to the board during Sheets’s tenure, and Domestic Relations Court Judge Randall Fuller.

The County broke ground today on a new Shared Services Building that will bring our Job & Family Services Dept, Board of Developmental Disabilities, Veterans Services Office, and Mental Health & Recovery Services Board together under one roof. The 70,000-square-foot building is being constructed at 2104 State Route 521 in Delaware and should be completed by late 2027. At our State of the County event last week, we rolled out a video in which County Auditor George Kaitsa explains property-tax reform in Ohio. It’s a complex issue, but he does a great job explaining how property taxes are used at the local level, how eliminating them would impact the services we all rely on each day, and then the reform efforts already underway. You can also access and download a one-page handout about this topic athttps://auditor.co.delaware.oh.us/wp-content/uploads/sites/23/2026/04/Property-Tax-Reform-in-Ohio-handout.pdf

We hosted our State of the County event on Monday. As part of it, we surprised Commissioner Barb Lewis, who will retire after the end of her term in December, with a special thank-you video. In addition to many officials, staff members and friends expressing their gratitude for her years of service, we spotlighted a very powerful program that Barb has championed: the Stepping Up Initiative. Thank you, Barb!
