🎒🚲 Back to school means more students on the move, so let’s talk e-bikes.

As students head back to school, e-bikes are becoming a popular way to get around Delaware. But whether you're a student, a parent, or just sharing the road with them, it’s important to know the rules.

Not all e-bikes are the same, and where you can ride depends on what class of e-bike you have.

Here are a few rules to know:

🚲 Class 1 & 2: Can use shared-use and bicycle paths, but the maximum speed is 10 mph. On sidewalks, the motor must be turned OFF and riders must yield to pedestrians.

🚲 Class 3: Riders must be 16 or older, wear an approved helmet and have a speedometer. Class 3 e-bikes are not permitted on sidewalks, bicycle paths or shared-use paths.

🚫 No pedals? If your "e-bike" doesn't have pedals, it may actually be considered a motorcycle. Motorcycles aren't permitted on sidewalks or bike paths, and a driver's license is required.

🏙️ Downtown: Bicycles and e-bikes cannot be ridden on sidewalks within Delaware's designated Downtown No-Riding Area. Dismount and walk your bike through the area.

🌳 Trails: E-bikes are prohibited on natural-surface, hiking, mountain bike, equestrian and other trails designated for non-motorized use.

And regardless of what you're riding: slow down, yield to pedestrians, follow traffic laws and wear a helmet.

Parents: this is a good time to have a quick conversation with your student about where they can ride and the rules that apply to their e-bike. A few minutes now can help keep everyone safe once school is back in session.

GREAT WORK! - Officers Crosbie and Moser were recently honored by Stop Stick for their outstanding work, in early June, safely stopping a Chevrolet Malibu that had been stolen from Strongsville, Ohio.

Delaware, Ohio Police Department Officers and Delaware County, OHIO, Sheriff's Office deputies were alerted by Flock Public Safety Cameras and attempted to stop the vehicle as it came into the City of Delaware, Ohio - Government, westbound, on US36/ST RT 37.

Thanks to Officers Crosbie and Moser's quick response and effective use of department‑issued equipment, they were able to safely deflate the vehicle’s tires near The Point, preventing it from getting further into the city and helping bring the incident to a controlled conclusion.

We’re proud of Officers Crosbie and Moser for their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to keeping our community safe. Excellent work!

The Delaware, Ohio Police Department stands with our brothers and sisters in law enforcement as we mourn the tragic loss of an officer from the Rittman, Ohio Police Department, who gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on Sunday.

Happy 4th of July, Delaware! 🎆 Make sure to stop by downtown today for a variety of events:

• 11 a.m. – Independence Day Parade starting at the Fairgrounds.
• 7:30 p.m. – Central Ohio Symphony Concert on the Phillips Glen Lawn of OWU.
• 10 p.m. – Fireworks! Great views can be found along Henry Street and the OWU athletic fields.

Graduation Day!

Officer Joshua Zoppa graduated this afternoon from the Ohio State Highway Patrol Academy, earning his Basic Peace Officer certification.

Next, he will begin the Field Training Program (FTO) with the City of Delaware, Ohio - Government, where he will ride with senior officers and complete a structured curriculum of on-the-job training.

The Delaware Police Department is now accepting registrations for the 2026 Citizens Police Academy!

This free, interactive program gives residents an inside look at law enforcement operations, including patrol procedures, investigations, community policing, and much more. Participants will have the opportunity to meet officers, ask questions, and gain a better understanding of
the challenges and responsibilities of modern policing.

📅 Registration is open now through August 31
📅 Classes run September 1 through November 10
🕕 Tuesdays from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.
