Delbarton Volunteer Fire Department

Delbarton Volunteer Fire Department Proudly serving Delbarton and surrounding communities in Mingo County, West Virginia since 1956! https://www.delbartonvfd.com/

Established in 1956, the Delbarton Volunteer Fire Department is a premier provider of emergency services in Mingo County – protecting residents and businesses within our primary response area.

Entrenched in the heart of Appalachia, the city of Delbarton is a historic coal town built in the geographic center of historic Mingo County, West Virginia. The city and surrounding area are HOME of the wo

rld-famous Hatfield McCoy Trails. Our response area stretches from the US-119 / State Route 65 intersection at Belo to the top of Horse Pen Mountain on US-52; our response area also covers US-52 to the top of Buffalo Mountain and Rockhouse Road to the top of Cow Creek Mountain. Our coverage area includes the communities of Bias, Elk Creek, Hell Creek, Musick, Pie, Ragland, Varney, and our home in Delbarton. Altogether, Delbarton VFD covers 65 square miles of territory within the boundaries of Mingo County, including several businesses, such as: 3 coal mines, a natural gas manufacturing plant, 3 schools, several governmental buildings, private businesses, and multi-family dwelling apartment complexes. Delbarton VFD is also responsible for rescue efforts on a large portion of the Hatfield McCoy Trail System, as well as several miles of state, county, and US roadway.

The Delbarton VFD provides comprehensive firefighting, extrication, specialized rescue, and fire prevention education from our station on Farley Avenue and our sub-station along US 52 in Pie with the help of an active roster of approximately 30 members, 2 – 1250 GPM engines, 1 medium duty rescue, 1 light duty rescue, a 3000 gallon tanker, and an off-road rescue vehicle (ATV). Our membership is made up of men and women of different backgrounds who have the common goal of providing superior fire protection, incident mitigation, and lifesaving rescue efforts for the people residing in, and visiting our coverage area. We are a non-profit organization, with a 100% volunteer membership, we take every emergency very seriously, and are committed to providing our services 24/7/365.

The Delbarton Fire Department responds to approximately 175-200 calls per year. Our response capabilities include fire suppression (structure fire, vehicle fires, etc.) utility emergencies (gas leaks, electrical emergencies), smoke investigations, carbon monoxide investigations, motor vehicle rescue and extrication, water rescue, technical rescue (high angle & low angle rope rescue, confined space rescue, etc.), disaster response and emergency medical service support. The bulk of the incidents the department responds to are minor in nature and include fire alarm activation, minor motor vehicle accidents, agency assists, and Landing Zone Setups. The department responds to an average of 12 working structure fires per year.

The DVFD receives the largest portion of its operating funds from the state of West Virginia quarterly award to fire departments. Additional funds for the department are generated through fund raising efforts of the volunteers. All funds collected are used for department activities or to purchase new equipment.

The Delbarton VFD actively seeks volunteers to bolster its ranks in a diverse range of services. We offer a long list of benefits including in-house or local training, flexible duty assignments, member incentives and events — and most importantly a friendly, fun, professional atmosphere where you’ll find a second family. 🚨 Public Safety Announcement! 🚨

The Delbarton Volunteer Fire Department is aware of the current ongoing wildfire, and we are closely monitoring the situation. West Virginia Division of Forestry personnel are currently on scene.

Remember, if the fire is within 100 feet or closer to your property, immediately contact 911.

During a wildfire, it is best to create defensible space around your structures—at least 30 feet on all sides—by removing flammable vegetation (leaves, brush, etc.).

On Saturday, September 20th, 2025, members of the Delbarton VFD (Station 200) were alerted by Mingo County 911 to respond to call 25-08145 for a garage fire at 10:27 hours.

Delbarton VFD responded with Engines 201 and 205, Tanker 202, as well as six POVs, totaling 12 personnel on scene. A Delbarton VFD unit arrived to find a single-story detached garage with heavy fire activity. The on-scene DVFD unit advised all responding 200 units that the fire was quickly spreading from the garage to the back of the house. The on-scene member also confirmed that all occupants were out of the structure.

Once Engine 201 arrived, units quickly deployed two 1¾-inch attack lines and a hydrant line to begin the initial fire attack. During a primary search of the house, Delbarton VFD’s interior crews located and rescued the resident’s pet cat. Firefighters were able to quickly locate the fire that had spread into the residence’s back rooms and attic area. Both interior and exterior units worked together to knock down the flames and bring the fire under control.

Delbarton units then proceeded with overhaul of the structure before clearing the scene and returning to service at 13:27 hours.

On this day... 24 years ago 246 people went to sleep in preparation for their morning flights. 2,606 people went to sleep in preparation for work in the morning tomorrow. 343 firefighters went to sleep in preparation for their morning shift. 60 police officers went to sleep in preparation for morning patrol. 8 paramedics went to sleep in preparation for the morning shift of saving lives. None of them saw past 10:00am Sept 11, 2001. In one single moment life may never be the same. As you live and enjoy the breaths you take today and tonight before you go to sleep in preparation for your life tomorrow, kiss the ones you love, snuggle a little tighter, and never take one second of your life for granted.

NEVER FORGET!

Our deepest condolences, thoughts, and prayers are with our brothers and sisters from Kermit Volunteer Fire Department, Mingo County Station 800, as they lost their leader, Chief Wilburn “Hawkie” Preece, Unit 803.

Not only did they loose their Chief, but also a brother, father, grandfather, and friend. Chief Preece served his community with honor for over 50 years. His legacy will be carried forward by all those lucky enough to serve along side him over his 5 decades of service to the citizens of Kermit and Mingo County.

Rest easy Chief. You may report to your new post, at the grand station in the sky. Your brothers and sisters have the watch on earth from here.

08/25/2025

We ask everyone this evening to join us in keeping our brothers and sisters from the Kermit Vfd in your thoughts and prayers as one of their own is in desperate need of a healing touch from above.

Thank you all in advance!
