Dogs and cats often come into contact with ticks when they are outside. Like humans, pets can get sick with tickborne diseases. In addition, pets can transport ticks from outside the home to inside, where the ticks may then bite people. Daily checks to find and remove ticks that are crawling on or biting your pets helps to keep them healthy. Check the image above for where to check your pets for ticks!

Protect yourself and your family by taking simple precautions to avoid tick bites, especially in wooded or grassy areas:
• Wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts and closed-toed shoes.
• Keep long hair tied back, especially when gardening.
• Check for ticks often while outdoors and brush them away before they attach.
• Perform a full body check multiple times during the day, as well as at the end of the day, to ensure that no ticks are attached.
• Tumble dry clothes in a dryer on high heat for 10 minutes to kill ticks after you come indoors.
• Shower soon after coming indoors.
• Check pets for ticks.
• Consider using EPA-registered repellents labelled as effective against ticks containing DEET, picaridin or IR3535, and follow label instructions. If you are using sunscreen, apply sunscreen first and insect repellent second. To learn more, watch https://bit.ly/4cOrOmx

On June 25th, Delaware County Public Health will be hosting a Free Rabies Vaccination Clinic for dogs, cats, and ferrets from 4:00PM-6:00PM, at the Roxbury Highway Department: 52508 State Highway, Roxbury, NY 12474.
• Pre-registration suggested. Scan QR Code below or visit http://health.ny.gov/go2clinic .
• It’s the law! Every dog and cat must be vaccinated against rabies.
• Cats and Dogs can get their first rabies vaccine at 3 months of age.
• Please bring the previous vaccination record to verify if your pet is eligible for 3-year coverage.
• Dogs must be on a leash & under proper control. Cats and Ferrets should be in a carrying case.
• Local organizations have volunteered their facilities for your convenience. It is your responsibility to clean up after your pet. It’s the law, you can be fined.
• The vet will only be available at the advertised clinic time-no earlier!

Their presenter, Dr. Caroline Gillenson , is a Fellow of Psychology in Psychiatry at Weill Cornell Medicine, completing a postdoctoral fellowship in pediatric psychology and integrated care. She has expertise in treating children and adolescents with behavior problems, anxiety disorders, and chronic medical conditions.
This virtual Health Condition Spotlight on Behavioral and Conduct Problems on June 10th at 10:30 AM ET is free and open to the public. Translated captions in a variety of languages will be available.
