PSA: If it sounds fishy, it's probably a scam.

In today's world of super creative (but still illegal) tele-scammers and web-based scammers, there very few ways we can recover assets once they are given out (money, gift cards, etc). The best course of action (and the cheapest) is prevention AKA don't give them the money in the first place.

Here are some things you can do to prevent yourself or someone you love from being tricked out of your hard earned money:

1. PAUSE! Don't rush to send money or pay anything. Take some time to think about what is happening.

2. CONSULT! Ask for help from someone you trust. There is wisdom in a multitude of counsel. You can always contact your local police department. If you are a Delmar resident, call 410-896-3131.

3. BE SURE! If someone is asking for money for something, be sure it is an authentic and legal request; see #2 if you need assistance.

Let's help each other stay safe from scammers.

How is it possible to hold one's breath for three long days? We cried, prayed, tried to rationalize what had happened, waited, tried not to think the worst, and then suddenly, we faced the worst. Our hero, dearly loved husband, father, brother, son, friend, colleague, peacekeeper, guardian.... was gone. It was a jolt even more painful than the initial news on Sunday, and when given the opportunity to gather again in Delmar several days later, to honor our fallen hero arriving back home, we came out to stand together.

The Delmar Police Department lost one of their own that day, and a grief so painful it enveloped both states of Maryland and Delaware settled across our community. Love and appreciation for Corporal Keith Heacook was evident everywhere, affecting us all and spilling across the country. I remember thinking that I hoped our hero could look down and see the lives he had touched. Forever loved; always missed; continue resting in peace, sir.
