I just happened upon this photo - Josephine Ives and Harry Milroy are pictured in front of the Milroy house in Delphi, circa 1900. Milroy is holding a paint palette and easel. The other two women are unidentified. The Ives family owned the Gould Moyer House from 1977 to 2022. I believe Josephine is the 2nd from the left.

From her obituary:
DELPHI-Mrs. Josephine Ives, 88, died at 6:30 p. m. Saturday (5/25/63) at Wesley Manor at Frankfort. She was born in Delphi March 25, 1875, the daughter of John A. and Susannah Hielt Carrwright. She married George R. Ives Sept. 26, 1900. He preceded her in death.

She was a housemother at Tudor Hall a Girls school in Indianapolis before returning to Delphi a number of years ago. She was a member of Delphi Methodist Church and Delphi Women's Club and was a graduate of DePauw University.

Her husband was a member of the firm of J. T. Ives and Sons, which operated the New York Store a department store in Delphi.

Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Robert A. Dole of Cambridge, Mass., and two sons, attorney Joseph T. Ives of Delphi and Maj. Gen. John Hiett Ives of San Antonio, Tex.

You can learn more about her in Candi Pastor Harrison's book, Doyennes of the Hill

Attic treasures!

Ezra found these letters buried in insulation in our attic.

They are letters to Eva Gould Moyer at age nine. The first one is from her father, Judge John Gould; the second from her uncle, Charles. The $1 given to Eva would be worth about $30.46 in 2025.

December 30, 1877
" My Dear Daughter,
I have received your sweet letter, and was very glad and very proud of my dear child when I read it. I wish you knew how much I love you.
Enclosed I send you one dollar. I expect to go home tomorrow evening. Give my love to mama. When I see you I will tell you all the news.
Your loving papa."

December 25, 1877
"My dear Eva,
I received your present this morning. I am very much obliged as it is so pretty. I shall always been proud of it as I am of my dear little, niece.
Your uncle Charlie"

We are eager to learn more about underground railroad activities in and around Delphi (and our house). Here is what we have so far:

Dr. Grimes was an abolitionist who knew the early inhabitants of 221 E Franklin and was a contemporary of Judge Gould.

The Old Crop In Indiana, written by Sarah Smith Pratt (1853 – 1942) includes passages devoted to her memories of Dr. Grimes visiting her family when they lived at 221 E Franklin St.

In honor of Veteran's Day:

Judge John H. Gould (born 1836 - died 1916) lived and worked in Delphi from the 1850s. Judge Gould helped raise and lead three different military companies during the Civil War:

- In 1861, John answered the first call of President Lincoln for volunteers by enlisting in Company A, Ninth Indiana Volunteer Infantry.
- Later he raised a company for the 46th Indiana Infantry, serving in West Virginia, Kentucky, and Missouri.
- He ended his military career as a Lieutenant Colonel of the 135th Indiana Volunteer Infantry.

He received elections and commissions during the course of the war such that he emerged at the conclusion as Colonel Gould. He held this title until 1876 when upon his election to the Carroll County Circuit Court he became for the rest of his life known as Judge Gould.
