This is sometimes one the hardest parts of the job, but one of the most important. It can be very time consuming as well.
The Search for Next of Kin — One of the Most Important Parts of What We Do
When someone passes away, one of our most sacred duties begins — finding and notifying their next of kin.
It’s not always as simple as checking a driver’s license or calling a family member. In many cases, we start with only fragments — a first name, an old address, a tattoo, a piece of mail, or a phone found at the scene. From there, investigators begin carefully piecing together the story of who this person was and who loved them.
We search databases, review medical and law enforcement records, contact employers, hospitals, and neighbors. We follow leads from social media, handwritten notes, or even conversations with friends and community members. Sometimes, we work across counties or states to find a single person who may not even know their loved one has passed.
Every call, every search, every confirmation is guided by one principle: no one should ever be left wondering what happened to someone they love.
When we finally find the right person — the mother, the son, the best friend — that moment matters. It is often one of the hardest and most human parts of this work. We prepare ourselves to deliver life-changing news with as much compassion and honesty as possible.
For the public, these steps are invisible. But for us, they are sacred.
It’s not just about closing a case — it’s about connection, dignity, and respect.
