***PRESS RELEASE***

The Delran Police Department is releasing the following updated information on the search for a drowning victim at Burlington County’s Amico Island Park:

Delran Police responded to the park at 81 Norman Avenue at 3:52 PM Monday, Aug. 24, for a report of two potential drowning victims.
Upon arrival, officers determined that an adult woman went into the Delaware River to rescue a juvenile girl who was struggling in the water. The woman, later identified as 33-year-old Priscila Alvares Pereira Dos Santos of Delran, was able to push the girl towards the shore, where other bystanders pulled her safely from the water, however, Priscila went underwater and did not resurface.

A search for Priscila ensued involving the Delran Police Department, Delran Fire Department, Delran Emergency Squad, Palmyra Emergency Squad, Riverside Police Department, Delanco Police Department, New Jersey State Police, Philadelphia Police Department, Philadelphia Fire Department, Burlington County OEM, Burlington County Sheriff’s Office, Burlington County Park Rangers, US Coast Guard, Camden County OEM, the Bellmawr Fire Department, and the Camden County Dive Team.

UPDATE: The search for Priscila Alvares Pereira Dos Santos was suspended at 9:45 PM Monday, but resumed at approximately 6:30 AM Tuesday, Aug. 25, involving drone operators from the Burlington County Sheriff’s Office and the New Jersey Office of Emergency Management.

At approximately 8:15 AM, the body of Priscila was located and recovered about 20 feet off a beach at Amico Island Park.

At this time, the circumstances involving this incident are not believed to be suspicious. The investigation into the incident is ongoing and will further be conducted by the Burlington County Medical Examiner’s Office. No additional information is being released at this time.

Amico Island Park will remain closed Tuesday due to the ongoing police investigation.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Detective Jared Halpern’s family, friends, and fellow officers during this difficult time. May you find comfort in the memories you shared and strength in the legacy of service they leave behind.

Rest in peace, Detective Halpern. Your sacrifice and service will always be remembered.

We are heartbroken to share the passing of Detective Jared Halpern.

Jared passed away last night, surrounded by the love of his family, after courageously facing his second battle with an extremely rare germ cell cancer.

While so many came to know Jared for his incredible strength, resilience, and determination throughout his fight, those who had the privilege of serving alongside him knew that his greatest legacy extends far beyond his illness. Jared was an exceptional police officer who served the Evesham Township community with honor, integrity, and compassion. He was a trusted mentor, a loyal friend, and the kind of person who always put others before himself. His professionalism, unwavering commitment, and sense of humor left a lasting impact on everyone who knew him.

Above all else, Jared was a devoted husband and father. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Jillian, and their two young children, who were the center of his world.

Our department, and our entire community are grieving an unimaginable loss. We ask that you please keep Jillian, their children, the Halpern family, Jared’s friends, and our entire Evesham Township Police family in your thoughts and prayers as we navigate the difficult days ahead and learn how to move forward without one of our own.

Jared’s courage, kindness, and selfless service will never be forgotten. His legacy will live on in the lives he touched, the officers he mentored, the community he protected, and the family he loved so deeply.

Rest easy, Detective Halpern. We have the watch from here.

🚲 New Jersey E-Bike Law Takes Effect July 19, 2026

The Delran Township Police Department would like to remind residents that New Jersey's new e-bike law goes into effect on July 19, 2026.

E-Bike Requirements

👤 Age & License
To operate an e-bike, you must:

Be at least 15 years old, and
Possess either:
A valid New Jersey E-Bike License, or
A valid driver's license.

Please Note: Individuals may not apply for or obtain an e-bike license while their driving privileges are suspended or revoked.

📋 Registration & Insurance

All e-bikes must be registered with the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC).
Motorized bicycles are required to carry insurance.
Low-Speed Electric Bicycles do not require insurance but must still be registered with the MVC.

Chester Ave has now reopened and is open to normal traffic.

Chester Ave from RT 130 to Greenwood Ave is currently closed for a gas leak. PSE&G crews are currently on location working on fixing the gas leak. We will update when Chester Ave is open. Please seek alternate route.
