🌶️ TODAY'S WEATHER OUT WEST: GHOST PEPPER STATUS 🌶️

Take a look at the latest weather map, and you’ll notice that the western half of Colorado is currently painted a vibrant shade of pink. That means a widespread Red Flag Warning is in effect today.

To put it in perspective: if fire weather conditions were hot sauce, we aren't dealing with a mild table salsa. Between the parched vegetation, intense heat, and high winds, we are firmly in Ghost Pepper territory.

🛑 The Critical Criteria
The National Weather Service issues these warnings when a dangerous trifecta aligns:

• Wicked Winds: Sustained winds and frequent gusts exceeding 25 mph.
• Bone-Dry Air: Relative humidity plunging to 15% or lower.
• Tinderbox Conditions: Extremely dry grasses and brush ready to ignite instantly.

When these conditions meet, any spark can rapidly grow into a dangerous, fast-moving wildfire.

🐻 Smokey Bear’s Spice Tolerance is ZERO:
Smokey reminds us that campfires and Red Flag conditions do not mix. Help our wildland firefighting crews out today by eliminating accidental ignitions and checking for fire restrictions before you head outside:

• Ditch the Campfire: If you are in a Red Flag zone, skip the campfire entirely. Even in areas where they aren't strictly banned, the wind can carry a single ember into dry brush in a split second.
• Drown It out: If you legally and safely had a fire previously, make sure it is drowned with water, stirred, and feel-tested cold before leaving it. If it's too hot to touch, it's too hot to leave.
• Trailer Safety: Secure your trailer chains! Ensure they aren't dragging and throwing sparks onto the roadside grass.
• Vehicle Awareness: Avoid parking or idling vehicles on dry grass. Hot exhaust systems can easily start a fire.
• Dispose Safely: Never toss ci******es or smoking materials out of vehicle windows.

🔥When fire danger rises, the words matter.

You may hear terms like FIRE WEATHER WATCH, FIRE THREAT, RED FLAG WARNING, and FIRE RESTRICTIONS — but they do not all mean the same thing.

Here’s the quick breakdown:

🔥 FIRE WEATHER WATCH
Conditions may develop into dangerous fire weather within the next 24 to 72 hours. Think of it as a heads-up.

🔥 FIRE THREATS
Wildfire risk is elevated because of conditions like dry vegetation, heat, low humidity, wind, drought, and available firefighting resources.

🚩 RED FLAG WARNING
Critical fire weather is happening now or expected soon. Fires can start easily and spread quickly.

🚫 FIRE RESTRICTIONS
These are official rules issued by the Delta County Sheriff’s Office to help reduce the risk of human-caused wildfires.

WHAT DO THESE STAGES MEAN?

STAGE1 Fire Restrictions - limit higher-risk activities. In Delta County, this includes no open or agricultural burning, no trash or debris burning, no fireworks, no exploding targets, no tracer ammunition, no bonfires or campfires on open ground or in rock rings, and no smoking near combustible materials.

STAGE 2 Fire Restrictions - are more restrictive and may prohibit additional activities such as campfires or bonfires, burn barrels, portable chimineas, charcoal BBQs, wood fire pits, tiki torches, and other activities that increase fire risk.

Delta County is currently under STAGE 1 RESTRICTIONS, effective Sunday, June 14, 2026.

Restrictions can vary depending on where you are. County restrictions may not apply to federal lands managed by agencies such as the Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Bureau of Reclamation, or National Park Service. Cities and towns may also adopt their own restrictions.

Nearly 85% of wildland fires in the U.S. are caused by humans, which means small choices can make a big difference.

Help prevent wildfires:

• Never throw ci******es out of a vehicle window.
• Keep trailer chains from dragging and sparking.
• Do not park or drive over tall, dry grass.
• Follow all burn restrictions.
• Never burn on windy days.
• Fully extinguish campfires where they are allowed. If it is too hot to touch, it is too hot to leave.
• Avoid spark-producing work during hot, dry, windy conditions.
• Secure loads and avoid dragging metal or equipment on roadways.
• Report smoke or fire immediately by calling 911.

Monday - June 8, 2026 - RED FLAG Warning Weather Conditions - No Open Burning Allowed!

The National US National Weather Service Grand Junction Colorado has issued Red Flag Warnings Again for today, Monday, June 8th and tomorrow, Tuesday, June 9th for Delta County. Critical Fire Weather Conditions are predicted with hot, dry and windy conditions which can lead to rapid wildfire growth.

Wind gusts up to 35 mph are possible today with gusts up to 45 mph on Tuesday.

Pursuant to Delta County Ordinance No. 2024-2 no open burning is allowed on Red Flag Days. Please exercise extreme caution when doing any activity that may create a spark outside!

‼RED FLAG WARNING – Thursday, May 28th – NO BURNING‼

The US National Weather Service Grand Junction Colorado has issued a Red Flag weather warning for Delta County today from 1pm-8pm.

Delta County is expected to have gusty winds from 20-40 mph, coupled with low relative humidity and dry fuels which means fire will catch and spread quickly.

Per Delta County Ordinance 2024-2, when the National Weather Service issues a Red Flag warning, there is NO OPEN BURNING ALLOWED.🚫

Please help stop any fires in Delta County from starting today by NOT burning. Report any fires to 9-1-1 or Delta County Dispatch at 970-874-2015.

The US National Weather Service Grand Junction Colorado has issued a Red Flag weather warning for Delta County.

Delta County is expected to have gusty winds up to 45 mph with low relative humidity as low as 9% which creates critical fire weather and can cause rapid wildfire growth.

Per Delta County Ordinance 2024-2, when the National Weather Service issues a Red Flag warning, there is NO OPEN BURNING ALLOWED.

Please help stop any fires in Delta County from starting today by NOT burning. Report any fires to 9-1-1 or Delta County Dispatch at 970-874-2015.
