People always ask, where does the water for Sweitzer Lake come from? Most of the water in the reservoir comes from the Garnet Mesa Canal. This canal feeds several fields, but the canal has very little return or waste water in it. The canal starts at the Uncompahgre River by Tiger Electric and parallas HWY 50 on the east side. Then comes by the lake and then heads north to the Gunnison River. We have attached a Google Earth picture to see the route it takes. The water is tested weekly for the Colorado Department of Health requirements. The lake normally test well below the limits for safe swimming. Yes it is a natural body of water and we recommend not to swim in it if you have open cuts, but Bill Heddles swimming pools have the same warning. Reach out to the park if you have questions!
