HIGH IMPORTANCE --Scary - Please read and respond

The Florida Legislature is scheduled to take up the property tax proposal at a Special Session beginning Monday of next week, continuing Tuesday and Wednesday if needed.

Volusia County's public libraries — the buildings, collections, staff, programs, and digital resources residents rely on — are funded almost entirely through property taxes. Under this amendment, that funding would be eliminated. No alternative funding source has been identified to replace it.

Libraries serve a remarkably wide range of people in our community. Job seekers use them for resume help and Internet access. Home schoolers and school students rely on them for computer access, homework, and research.

Seniors depend on large-print collections, digital assistance, and social programming. Children participate in summer reading and enrichment programs.

Small business owners use research databases. Residents who need help navigating government services turn to library staff for guidance. For many of these residents, the public library is the only free resource available to them.

We want library supporters to understand the nature of what is being considered. This is not a situation where libraries would absorb a modest budget reduction and adjust their hours or programs.

If property tax funding is constitutionally prohibited and no replacement is provided, , the impact would be severe — potentially meaning closed branches, reduced staff, and significantly diminished services.

The Florida Legislature is scheduled to take up the property tax proposal at a Special Session beginning Monday of next week, continuing Tuesday and Wednesday if needed.

If you are a Friends of the Library member, a library volunteer, or someone who simply values what your public library means to this community, PLEASW consider reaching out to your state legislators before the Special Session this weekend or by Monday of next week.

The session is scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday if needed — so if sharing your perspective is something you would like to do, this weekend is the window to do it. The decision on whether to place this amendment before voters will likely be made early next week.

Books change lives.

But right now, millions of children in America live in “book deserts” where access to books, literacy programs, and reading support is limited or nonexistent.

That’s why we need your help supporting the Open Books, Open Doors Act (S. 4028)

Please sign the petition today and then click to share it on Facebook, Bluesky, Twitter, Threads, and LinkedIn.

This important legislation would invest in literacy programs, expand access to developmentally appropriate books, support family reading initiatives, and help communities ensure every child has the opportunity to learn, grow, and succeed through reading.

Literacy is about more than education. It’s about opportunity, economic mobility, civic participation, and giving every child the tools they need to build their future.

At a time when reading scores are declining and access to books is under attack in many communities, we cannot afford to do nothing.

We are building public support for this bill and showing lawmakers that Americans believe every child deserves access to books and the freedom to read.

Together, we can help open doors for millions of children across the country. Thank you for standing up for literacy, education, and opportunity.

EveryLibrary builds support for libraries and helps Americans fight book banning in their communities.

Volusia County Public Library is about to launch this phase of our 4-phase reading challenge platform geared for children, tweens, and teens!

It officially launches Saturday (though it softly opens today). This really ties together what the library’s team has been developing and implementing in support of emergent to early to lifelong literacy goals!

These are year-round literacy support for families. Of course, the library still hosts seasonal reading challenges, for all ages, in the Summer (pre-registration is now open!), Fall, Winter, and Spring! Too, for adults, we are midway through an all year America250 Reading Challenge.

See https://volusialibrary.beanstack.org/reader365 for all our current reading challenges.

I am making a list of Florida authors to have in the Book Nest and this site was a big help. Who knew there were so many?

We are fortunate to have so many Florida authors who not only write compelling stories and novels, but also often use Florida setting in their stories.
