HIGH IMPORTANCE --Scary - Please read and respond
The Florida Legislature is scheduled to take up the property tax proposal at a Special Session beginning Monday of next week, continuing Tuesday and Wednesday if needed.
Volusia County's public libraries — the buildings, collections, staff, programs, and digital resources residents rely on — are funded almost entirely through property taxes. Under this amendment, that funding would be eliminated. No alternative funding source has been identified to replace it.
Libraries serve a remarkably wide range of people in our community. Job seekers use them for resume help and Internet access. Home schoolers and school students rely on them for computer access, homework, and research.
Seniors depend on large-print collections, digital assistance, and social programming. Children participate in summer reading and enrichment programs.
Small business owners use research databases. Residents who need help navigating government services turn to library staff for guidance. For many of these residents, the public library is the only free resource available to them.
We want library supporters to understand the nature of what is being considered. This is not a situation where libraries would absorb a modest budget reduction and adjust their hours or programs.
If property tax funding is constitutionally prohibited and no replacement is provided, , the impact would be severe — potentially meaning closed branches, reduced staff, and significantly diminished services.

If you are a Friends of the Library member, a library volunteer, or someone who simply values what your public library means to this community, PLEASW consider reaching out to your state legislators before the Special Session this weekend or by Monday of next week.
The session is scheduled for Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday if needed — so if sharing your perspective is something you would like to do, this weekend is the window to do it. The decision on whether to place this amendment before voters will likely be made early next week.
