The Deltona Fire Department was founded in 1962 as a volunteer organization to provide basic fire protection to a growing population of mostly retirees. In 1977 began expanding its fire service with a combination of full time paid personnel combined with volunteers to include first responder and Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) care. In 1983 the fire department hired its first paid fire chief an

d soon after implemented Advanced Life Support (ALS) medical service provided by EMT and Paramedic firefighters. Throughout the years the fire department expanded to its current complement of 5 fire stations, staffed with 4 engine companies, 1 ladder company, 3 rescue units and a Battalion Chief. All of our engine, ladder and rescue companies are staffed as licensed advanced life support units. The fire department’s diverse workforce consists of 99 personnel serving in the operations, logistics and administration divisions with other support positions. The operations division is the largest consisting of 84 personnel evenly spaced over three twenty-four hour shifts. This group responds to requests to mitigate whatever situation they are presented with in a coordinated, professional manner. The administrative and support positions of the department include Training and Safety, Operations, Administration, Emergency Management, Logistics, and the office of the Fire Chief. These personnel support the overall operation of the department in ensuring the personnel and associated services are in place and prepared at all times. Together, these dedicated professionals serve Deltona’s population of approximately 97,000 residents and approximately 34,000 households. The fire department responds to more than 12,000 requests for service annually varying in type from assisting persons back into bed, emergency medical services, motor vehicle accidents, weather-related, wild fire and structural fires. As an all-hazards department we are ready for most any situation that presents itself including high-angle, confined space and trench rescue, vehicle extrication and hazardous materials incidents. We take great pleasure in serving the citizens and visitors of the City of Deltona which is reflected in our motto emblazoned on our vehicles: “Serving Our Community with Pride, Dedication and Honor” because we do each and every day.

A Red Flag Warning is issued when critical fire weather conditions are happening or about to happen. It does not necessarily mean there is a fire, but that conditions will be very dry and windy. If a fire is present, it can become extreme! Avoid activities that could spark a wildfire! weather.gov

Twenty four years after September 11, 2001, history still remembers the emergency workers responding to the World Trade Center as heroes.

They were mothers, fathers, sons, daughters, husbands, wives, friends, and colleagues. They were devoted to bettering the world around them, to helping fellow human beings. Countless men and women stepped forward, braving the overwhelming danger.

We remember them. Every firefighter, paramedic, EMT, police officer, and dispatcher. We remember every lost family member, friend, spouse, parent, and colleague. We remember those tormented by vivid, terrible memories. We remember those suffering through failing health.

On this day, as we face our own challenges, we take a moment to offer our love, compassion, and gratitude to those who sacrificed everything.

Yesterday Chief Snyder closed the book on more than four decades in the fire service and began another on retirement. Thank you Chief for all that you have done for the citizens of Deltona and the fire department!
