Happy New Year!! I wanted to do an update- as stated in much of our informational documents, The Tax Clinic offers free IRS services for low income members/Veterans of the Denton, County community along with surrounding areas. What makes this program unique is that we are using UNT Graduate Accounting Students as the Student Practitioner’s, each of whom is supervised by a licensed tax professional, to resolve IRS controversies. Not only are we using UNT’s Accounting Students, but we also use UNT’s Language Department as translators as well as students from TWU. This is one (if not the only) program that links both TWU and UNT together. The Clinic typically DOES NOT prepare tax returns. That job is handled by the United Way of Denton County’s VITA (Voluntary Income Tax Assistance) Program- which we work closely with to collectively resolve virtually any tax issue. (United Way of Denton County)

As we began seeing more Veteran Clients at the Tax Clinic, we found out that the Veteran services were wide spread out across Denton County and many Veterans have tax issues. Attorney Bob Widmer (Founder/President) was able to find the means and support to form the Denton County Veterans Center (located directly across the hall). Within the Veteran Center there are multiple service providers housed under one roof making it easier for Veterans to find support without having to jump from location to location. Currently, the providers that are available at this location is the United Way’s Veteran Navigator Program, Youth and Family Counseling, Texas Veterans Commission, Military Veteran Peer Network, The Veterans Coalition, VA- Hud-Vash, and Catholic Charities. In addition, if there are additional resources for Client’s are needed, they have the ability to connect with those resources. We are confident both programs will continue to grow and be successful. (Denton County Veterans Center) (Denton County Veterans Coalition) (Denton Chapter, Military Veteran Peer Network) Catholic Charities Diocese of Fort Worth, Inc.) (Texas Veterans Commission) (Camo & Kilos)

The importance of these two programs being co-located is that Veterans have tax issues and collaboratively, we are able to work together to solve multiple issues/hardships.

Our goal is to get this community linked to services in remote locations, that they have not have had access to before.

If you know someone in need, whether it be a tax issue or a Veteran in need of guidance. This is the place to come. Please share and spread the word, as many do not know about available assistance- not only through us, but other non-profits as well.

Please don't be afraid to ask for help... We all need a little help sometimes.
