🌡️ Hot Cars Can Turn Deadly in Minutes 🌡️

As temperatures rise, it's important to remember that a vehicle can heat up dangerously fast—even with the windows cracked.

🚸 Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle, not even for a minute.

One simple way to help prevent a tragedy is to place an item you need at your destination—such as your purse, wallet, phone, employee badge, or lunch bag—in the back seat next to your child. This creates a reminder to check the back seat every time you park.

✔️ Look before you lock.
✔️ Keep vehicles locked when not in use.
✔️ Teach children that cars are not play areas.
✔️ If you see a child alone in a vehicle, call 911 immediately.

A moment of awareness can save a life. Please help spread the word and keep our children safe this summer.

🚗🦦 We are excited to partner with our community agencies to support the "You Otter Buckle Up" campaign throughout Caroline County!

Buckling your child in the proper car seat remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to prevent serious injury and save lives in a crash. Through this initiative, we hope to encourage families to make sure their littles are safe!

Our goal is simple: promote car seat safety and help keep the little residents of Caroline County safe on our roadways.

Thank you to all of our partners who are helping spread this important message. Together, we can make a difference—because every life is worth protecting.

🦦 You Otter Buckle Up! 🦦

We're excited to introduce You Otter Buckle Up, a child passenger safety initiative created by local organizations committed to keeping Caroline County's children safe.

The inspiration for this campaign came from a difficult reality. In January 2025, within a single week, several children in northern Caroline County were injured in motor vehicle accidents because they were either unrestrained or improperly restrained. Local EMS providers, emergency department staff, and healthcare professionals witnessed injuries that may have been prevented with proper car seat use.

With financial support from the Caroline County Health Department Maryland and The Caroline Foundation, partners including Caroline County Recreation and Parks, Choptank Community Health System, Caroline County Department of Emergency Services, Caroline County Department of Social Services , Greensboro ES Judy Center Early Learning Hub, Caroline County Public Schools, local fire department volunteers, and many others came together around one simple goal: helping more children get home safely.

Soon, you'll begin seeing our otter friend at schools, parks, athletic fields, healthcare offices, and community spaces throughout the county. We hope these friendly reminders encourage families to take a few extra moments to make sure every child is buckled safely, every ride.

So please enjoy our otter, share the message, and help us spread the word. By working together as a community, we can help ensure more children arrive home safely after every ride.

Hurricane Season is Here. Is Your Family Ready?

Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, and while Caroline County may be inland, the impacts of tropical systems can still be significant.

Heavy rainfall, flash flooding, downed trees, power outages, and strong winds can all occur long before a storm makes landfall along the coast.

Now is a good time to take a few simple steps to prepare:

• Review your emergency plans with your family
• Make sure you have enough food, water, medications, and pet supplies for several days
• Check flashlights, batteries, and backup power sources
• Sign up for emergency alerts and monitor trusted weather sources
• Secure outdoor furniture and loose items before severe weather arrives

Preparing before a storm is approaching can make all the difference when conditions change quickly.

The Caroline County Department of Emergency Services encourages residents to take a few minutes now to make sure they are ready for whatever this hurricane season may bring.

Stay informed. Stay prepared. Stay safe.

As EMS Appreciation Week comes to an end, we want to recognize D Shift of the Caroline County Department of Emergency Services and the people behind the radios, ambulances, and late-night responses that keep this county moving.

Caroline County is different. We are spread out, rural, and built on neighbors helping neighbors. Help is not always right around the corner here, which makes the people answering these calls matter even more. In the middle of the night, down back roads, during storms, or in moments nobody plans for, this crew is there.

What makes D Shift special is not loud moments or big recognition. It’s the consistency. The ability to walk into difficult situations and still treat people with patience, dignity, and care. It’s the personalities that keep each other going during long shifts and the understanding that this work is about people first.

Thank you to Wayne Grimm, Ryan Petrone (not pictured), Trudy Norbury, Sean Humphreys, Natalie Rowlands, Lt. Kevin Gillespie, John Brinkley, Jacob Wilson, Elizabeth Shockley, David Buswell, Ashley Hampton, and Amberly Totaro for everything you give to Caroline County. This community depends on you more than most people will ever realize.
