When wildland fires threaten communities across Texas, our crews answer the call without hesitation. The heat is relentless, the hours are grueling, and exhaustion runs deep—yet spirits never waver. A quick moment in the shade to catch our breath, regroup, and then it is straight back to work protecting lives, homes, and land.
We are proud of the Lewisville firefighters and all the firefighters currently deployed across the state, giving everything they have on the front lines day in and day out.

09/01/2026

11:45 pm: E. University is reopened at N. Bell.
Eastbound has only one lane, but westbound fully open.
N. Bell is still closed from Woodland to University and University to Chapel due to digging that had to be done to stop the leak. Unknown how long Bell will be closed at this time.

GAS LEAK UPDATE: SEPT 1. at 10:15 P.M.
Atmos still having to dig through concrete and rock to get to lines. Gas is still not shut off. Roads are still closed in the area.

UPDATE: SEPT. 1 at 9 P.M.
Atmos is still working to shut down gas to this area. Digging taking place through concrete, asphalt, and rock, making this a long and more difficult situation. We will update again in a few hours.

UPDATE: SEPT. 1 at 4:15 P.M.
All lanes of E. University and N. Bell remain closed and will be for several more hours into the night. Atmos is on scene digging to locate the pipe to shut down the gas flow then begin repairs. There is no estimate on when the roads will open. There is still no threat to the public or evacuations needed.

UPDATE: SEPT. 1 at 2:30 P.M. There is a gas leak at E. University at N. Bell that has now shut down all of University and Bell traffic in all directions.

GAS LEAK AND TRAFFIC ALERT:

UPDATE: SEPT. 1 at 2:30 P.M.
There is a gas leak at E. University at N. Bell that has now shut down all of University and Bell traffic in all directions.

-Eastbound University closed: Locust to Bell
-Westbound University closed: Frame to Locust
-N. Bell closed: Woodland to Chapel

For the past 3 weeks, Denton FD members have been supporting wildfire suppression efforts around the state, from Palo Pinto to Palestine, Beeville to Hamilton.

We currently have 3 members working the Ross Fire. Here are some of the pictures:

3:35 p.m. — Fire is under control.

WORKING STRUCTURE FIRE in the 600 block of Smith Street in SE Denton. Interior fire attack, no known injuries at this time.

9:15 a.m. update: All lanes reopened. The HazMat company had to work through the night, but they got it done.

3:45 p.m update:
This afternoon, a truck carrying kitchen grease on Sherman Drive began leaking along Bell Avenue. As a result, portions of one westbound lane on Sherman Drive and portions of the southbound lane on Bell Avenue between Sherman Drive and Eagle Drive are closed.

In addition, sections of the southbound lane on Dallas Drive, from Eagle Drive to Teasley Lane, are also closed. These closures are not continuous but affect multiple segments along these roadways.

A remediation company has arrived to assist with the cleanup.

TRAFFIC ALERT BELL/McKINNEY:
There’s a large spill of kitchen grease causing slippery roads and a not-so-pleasant odor downtown. It’s going to take a few hours to remediate. So hold your nose and take it slow in that area!

Yesterday, we had the honor of recognizing a few members of our team.

Davis Bird, one of our own, was officially sworn in and promoted to his new rank of Fire Driver. Congratulations.

Joel Manes, from the City of Denton Police Department, was recognized with an EMS Excellence Award for going above and beyond the call of duty. Well done.

Rita Cooks & Colton Smith, new members of our Administrative staff, were officially welcomed to the team and presented with their shields. Welcome.
