The first real heat (it hit 86 but felt like 94 with the humidity and no clouds) didn’t stop the United Through Hope members from getting out to their local Preston Manor park to shoot some hoops and have nerf battles and play hide and seek on the last weekend of May!

Party time because school is now out and the United Through Hope members sure did! They enjoyed making color changing drinks with sprite as the base and then pouring in grenadine to make it red or adding in pink or blue cotton candy to the clear sprite. Delicious was the unanimous decision.

Then they put on the tunes and danced! Freeze dances, group dancing, and costume fun! Loved the storm trooper doing the national anthem and then when 15 members joined in for the Macarena.

Sometimes what we think shouldn’t be a big deal ends of being a huge feat to overcome due to emotional baggage we carry.

An example of that happened in the teen game night. The card game Taco, Goat, Cheese, Pizza is easy -slap on a certain card and say the correct name that comes up (like cheese). BUT for one member who was mercifully teased for years at school about “cheese effect” (from Diary of a Wimpy Kid) the game became quite emotional to the point he couldn’t play it.

No one knew why but a staff, Dr. Harrier, figured it out and slowly coached him through the emotions it brought up to bring it back to “this is a game with people who haven’t tried to hurt you.” He calmed down and was able have fun the rest of the evening.

The United Through Hope members clearly enjoyed their time at Urban Air Southlake hanging out with their buds on all the attractions BUT the UTH staff was the most impressed with how they showed off their pivoting skills! No where on the website or anything sent to Dr. Harrier indicated they were cashless now! Yikes when 27 hungry kids suddenly need to eat and almost everyone has cash and the facility can’t take it. It was pivot time!

Dr. Harrier ran that credit card many times over (scary it never got hit for fraud) and helped the kids make change to ti pay Dr Harrier but also so they still had money for later on that evening should they need it.

The UTH members were so patient with Dr. Harrier as she navigated all the lunch time craziness for them. They all got their food and rolled with the delays with an abounding amount of patience. Go future leaders!!!

United Through Hope is expressing a heartfelt thank you and we ♥️ you to Art who runs Game Changers in Denton. He always makes our group feel welcomed and his staff is always upbeat, kind, and positive. Our favorite staff member who runs cashier is incredibly sweet as he takes 25 orders & doesn’t blink as they figure out cash or how to sign a credit card!

Art has created a venue where kids can feel welcomed and memories are built while they try their hand at darts and pool and compete between each other on basketball, pac man, guitar hero, & Jurassic park.

Thanks Art and his crew for Keeping Denton kid friendly and enjoyable! Our members look forward to coming each month for their Saturday night meetup.

Dr. Harrier wanted to send a thanks out to all the parents who have been sending her texts this month about their child’s (and young adult’s) accomplishments. She is grateful to have been a part of their lives and helped them grow.

She’s loved receiving pictures of them beaming and walking tall while they walked up to receive awards they have won from their elementary and middle schools. Reading 3 year growth letters their teacher have written that highlight their trials and triumphs and seeing pictures of them participating in high school and college graduation ceremonies.

It’s been wonderful to see the achievements of the (now young adults) who have gone on to pursue their interests like earning her Associates in Animation and another their Bachelors in Visual Arts and Media with a minor in Film. Their sense of accomplishment of Completing their year of an in depth internship at the Ga***rd Hotel to build varying hospitality industry skills and Another getting a B in his first welding class that he spent hours trying to master the challenging process and while enduring many burns as he gained skills.

Often when working with kids and adults in the capacity she does you never hear how they end up and Dr. Harrier is grateful people thought of her because hearing and seeing these always brings her renewed faith she is doing her calling.

The 1st-5th were very busy creating together during their Saturday Allstars session in Frisco. They designed a market and even had the train delivering in food items! Then they added a restaurant in the market and designed a cooking area. They got out the register and cash and pretended to purchase items.

The really neat part was this was all kid directed. No adult hinted to do any of it. Over the hour they were together they led their own play that way!

Staff was just nearby to help with better word choices so they could all stay in the happy fun zone of mind!

Next Allstars is May 30!

Hangman has been around since 1902 and it continues bring the United Through Hope teens an immensely hilariously good time. They worked hard on coming up with phrases that would be so tough they would be able to concentrate on developing their funny hangman pictures. At one point the members just started saying random phrases just to see how intricate one of the drawings was going to get. They turned it into a competition (of course) to see who could take the phrases and pictures to the next level. Had to usher them out the door at 9pm or else they surely would have been there all night!

Good times, great memories, quality time spent building relationships with zero electronics!

Next teen groups are May 29-May 30!
