We're so excited to kick off the UNT Special Collections Summer Archives Institute! 🎉📦

This immersive, hands-on program brings graduate students together with UNT librarians to gain real-world experience arranging and describing archival collections — building the skills that will shape the next generation of heritage professionals.

So glad to have our participants here and can't wait to see what we uncover together this summer!

We are thrilled to welcome our newest team member to the department! Brannon Smith joins us as a Processing Archivist at the University of North Texas, bringing with them a wealth of experience and a deep passion for archival work.

No stranger to UNT, Brannon previously served as a Student Assistant in Special Collections, gaining valuable hands-on experience in cataloging and archival processing. They hold a Bachelor of Arts in History from Southern Arkansas University and a Master of Library and Information Science with a concentration in Archives from the University of North Texas.

Outside of the office, Brannon is an avid sewist and embroidery enthusiast, and has a great appreciation for all things horror. We are so glad to have them on the team — welcome!

✨ Rare Book Spotlight! ✨

Have you heard of Stella Benson? This English poet, novelist, and travel writer blended fantasy and reality in fascinating ways — yet her work remains little known today. One of her gems, The Awakening: A Fantasy (1925), was published in a limited edition of just 500 copies by San Francisco's Lantern Press and printed by the renowned Grabhorn Press, with a beautiful illustration by artist Donald William McKay.

The good news? You can request to view this rare piece of literary history right here at UNT Special Collections! 📖

⚽ With the World Cup coming to North Texas, did you know the region has a soccer history that goes back to 1967? 🤠

Before the beautiful game became a household name here, coach Bob Kap took the very first professional soccer team in Texas — the Dallas Tornado Soccer Club — on a wild 7-month, 20-country world tour. Wearing cowboy shirts, Levi's, and Stetson hats to rep Dallas, they played 45 matches across Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Pacific Islands — including matches in Vietnam during the war and in sweltering heat in India! 🌏

Now, UNT Special Collections is exhibiting rare photos, artifacts, home movies, and memorabilia from that incredible first season as part of the Kap Collection. It's a one-of-a-kind look at how soccer found its Texas roots.

⚽Please join Special Collections for the opening reception of 1967: The Year Soccer Came to Texas!

⭐Rare soccer memorabilia and never seen photos of soccer clubs around the world will be on display at the UNT CoLab from June 5 through June 26, 2026. The opening reception is June 5 from 5:00 - 7:00 p.m.

Materials on display are drawn from the collection of Bob Kap, head coach for The Dallas Tornado Soccer Club. The Dallas Tornado was the first professional soccer team in Texas. It was founded by two wealthy sports fanatics in 1967, coached by a Yugoslavian immigrant, and employed only one American player.

Exhibit visitors will have an opportunity to learn more about the original Texas soccer club, see soccer pennants, posters, flyers, photos, and ephemera collected by Kap during the 1967-1968 season. Visitors can also purchase limited edition t-shirts featuring original drawings from Bob Kap’s soccer playbook at the UNT CoLab. 👕

📚 There are currently 232 unique Special Collections represented by over 600,000 digitized photos, videos, documents, and physical objects.
