For unmarried parents, an Acknowledgement of Parentage, or AOP, is a form that legally establishes a child’s parents. An AOP is typically completed at the hospital after a child’s birth but can also be filled out any time before a child turns 18. If signed by both parents, an AOP established a legal parent/child relationship for all purposes upon filing with the office of Vital Records.

Parentage can be established several ways:

Presumption of Parentage: In the State of Colorado, if parents are married when a child is born, this creates a “presumption of parentage”.

Court Order: Parentage may be established by a Court or Administrative Order.

Acknowledgement of Parentage: Parentage can be established by an Acknowledgment of Parentage (AOP) form. This document may be completed at the hospital after the birth of the child or any time before the child reaches the age of 18. The AOP form must be filed with the Office of Vital Records.

Why is establishing legal parentage important?

Identity – When a child knows their parents, it can create a sense of belonging, family lineage and cultural inheritance.

Medical – Children benefit by knowing if they have inherited any health conditions and may gain access to medical insurance through either parent.

Financial Support – Establishing Parentage can help ensure both parents contribute financially to the needs of their child.

Access to Benefits - Children may have the right to certain benefits, such as: social security, pensions, inheritance rights, veteran’s benefits, tribal rights, and access to medical records.
