Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book Convenes literary, cultural, & historical community-based programs for Coloradans of all ages

The only nonprofit Colorado organization dedicated to providing opportunities to explore what it means to be human through our history, literature and culture. Working in partnership with the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Smithsonian, and as the host of the Colorado Center for the Book, affiliated with the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.

2026 is a special year for Colorado, as we celebrate our 150th anniversary in the same year that the United States celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence - the only state to do so! “ ( To celebrate, the America 250 - Colorado 150
Commission invites all Coloradans to acknowledge our complete shared history, honor what makes Colorado unique, and recognize our shared destiny as we strive toward a more perfect union.

Say hello to the Spring 2026 reading list which offers an opportunity to engage and enjoy different stories and histories.

In partnership with History Colorado, Denver Public Library, the Colorado State Library, and the Colorado Department of Education, we created seasonal reading lists for the America 250 - Colorado 150 commemoration to serve as a resource throughout the celebration.

Two Poets Laureate in Boulder

Join us for a celebration of Begin Where You Are April 15 at the Boulder Bookstore.

This event will feature Colorado’s new poet laureate Crisosto Apache, and Joseph Hutchison.

The Colorado Poets Laureate Anthology nonprofit will use the book’s revenues to raise money to close this gap.

In partnership with our publishers, University Press of Colorado and Center for Literary Publishing, a portion of the book’s proceeds will contribute to supporting the Colorado Poet Laureate by establishing a fund, which will to provide grants to Colorado Poets Laureate, allowing them to attend poetry readings and events in rural areas and lower-income schools and libraries.

Colorado Humanities is hosting a Facilitator Training on April 27–28 (9 a.m.–4 p.m.) in Centennial for people interested in leading meaningful community conversations.
This two-day training prepares participants to facilitate reflective discussions across differences on topics like race and ethnicity, dying and grief, veteran experiences, and change in rural Colorado. Those who complete the training will be certified to facilitate conversations with Colorado Humanities across the state.
Participants will also join our statewide facilitator network, with opportunities to reconnect through periodic gatherings to share experiences, strengthen skills, and build relationships with others doing this work in their communities.

We’re excited to announce that submissions are now open for the 2026 Colorado Book Awards, presented in partnership with Metropolitan State University of Denver and the Denver Project for Humanistic Inquiry (Dphi).

Each year, the Colorado Book Awards celebrate the achievements of Colorado’s outstanding authors, with volunteer selectors and judges from across the state reading submitted works to determine finalists and winners.

Books published between November 1, 2024 and December 31, 2025 are eligible for submission. The deadline to submit a book is March 22, 2026.
Colorado Humanities & Center for the Book is also seeking readers from across the state to serve as volunteer judges for the 2026 Colorado Book Awards.

Judges play a vital role in the adjudication process by reading and evaluating submitted works. The deadline to submit a volunteer interest form is March 1, 2026.

We are incredibly excited for our upcoming Black History Live 2026 tour! Thank you so much to our program partners who are helping host this event at venues across the state of Colorado. This years theme is a celebration of the and learning more about the important contributions of African Americans in the American West.

The 2026 statewide tour will feature the living-history portrayals of Mary Fields by nationally acclaimed scholar/actor Becky Stone and York by scholar/actor Marvin Jefferson.
