Instagram recently removed the option for end-to-end encryption for direct messages. This means that messages that were previously only viewable by the sender and recipient can now be viewed by the platform, too.
Why does it matter? For survivors seeking support or sharing sensitive information, anything shared through direct messages on Instagram is now not completely confidential, as Instagram itself will be able to see any messages sent. However, this also means that Instagram can more easily address harmful or malicious direct messages.
