Inter-Neighborhood Meeting- Fireworks
May 10th 2017 Garden Park Church
All neighborhoods in District 4 were invited to attend. Ruby Hill, Athmar, and College View attended along with Commander Fleece and Office Nathan Beiriger.
Topics Discussed.
Improve Communication with Police and Public
• Denver Police have discontinued utilizing Neighbor Next Door and Facebook. They are currently informing neighbors of a new system called Pocket Gov.
o This website provides a service to make personal or anonymous, non-emergency reports and follow updated police information pertinent to concerned areas that you may have. Information will be sent to your email address if you create an account.
o You can check information both on your computer and your phone but there is not a phone app for it.
• If immediate action is needed call 911.
• District 3,4,2, are currently using Pocket Gov. District 1 and 6 will be on line.
How to Report Fireworks in Neighborhood:
• Non-Emergency Number 720-913-2000
o Call this number to talk to a dispatcher and for a possible immediate response.
o Must have specific information like an exact address or name of the neighbor lighting fireworks otherwise it is difficult for Police to find the area of concern.
o Keep in mind that officers need to prioritize calls. Fireworks are at the bottom of the priority list if there is a life threating emergency.
o Neighbors had mentioned that Dispatchers were often not sensitive to their concerns. Commander Fleece said that he will be talking with the dispatchers on how they can be more effective with the public concerning fireworks.
• District 4 Fireworks Hotline: 720-913-7989
o This is a proactive tip line with either a person or message machine answering. This number is not to be used as an immediate response but rather a proactive tip line. If you chose to leave your contact info, the police will get back to you.
o This is a good number to call if there are neighbors who habitually light fireworks every year. District 4 will be hanging flyers on the doors of houses of the area where the habitual fireworks are lit as a way to remind neighbors of the law.
Preventative Measures:
• District 4 will be getting some extra, dedicated fireworks enforcement officers this firework season since 60-65% of calls on July 4, 2016 came from District 4.
• Police Officers paired with Fire Department personnel will be pro-actively patrolling around the neighborhood.
• Overtime will be offered to extra officers to patrol neighborhoods for fireworks.
• Hanging door fliers to remind residents of the law.
• A resident volunteered to make a short information video interviewing District 4’s Firework Plan to be circulated on Facebook and Neighbor Next Door.
• Citations of up to $1000 can be issued.
• At a request of a neighbor, Officer Bieriger will be talking with Management of the apartments on Jewell and Raritan about good neighbor expectations in regards to fireworks.
