There's no substitute for seeing operations firsthand. 👀

Earlier this summer, Region 8 visited the Dave Johnston Power Plant in Wyoming to learn more about the facility's operations. 💡 The Dave Johnston power plant uses local Wyoming coal, supports hundreds of Wyoming mining and energy jobs and is essential to delivering reliable, affordable energy to families across the state. Site visits like these help deepen our understanding of Wyoming's energy landscape and strengthen our relationships with the state and the communities we serve. 💪

Did you know some of our hardest working employees are also our smallest? Microbes can be instrumental in Superfund cleanup.

You may have heard of "bioremediation" as a tool we use to clean up certain contaminants and these microbes make it happen. These microbes are naturally occurring and harmless to humans, but conditions have to be right for them to be effective, meaning it's not a solution for every site. Bioremediation can be a cost effective approach, since it requires minimal disruption, equipment, labor or energy.

An example of where bioremediation is currently in use is the Libby Groundwater site in Lincoln County, Montana.

You can read more about bioremediation at https://www.epa.gov/emergency-response/biological-agents

Recently, the EPA and Montana DEQ site team for the CFAC Superfund Site traveled to beautiful Columbia Falls for a site visit and community meetings.

Field teams have been busy at work this summer capping several landfills, lining the Cedar Creek Reservoir Overflow Ditch, and excavating areas with contaminated soil. Pending the Consent Decree being entered, EPA will oversee the design and construction of the major remaining cleanup action: a fully encompassing slurry wall that will prevent groundwater from contacting underground materials contaminated with cyanide and fluoride. Construction on the slurry wall is expected to begin in 2027.

Happy National Day of Motoring! 🎉

Today, we're celebrating the American-made vehicles that keep our country moving. 🚚 🇺🇸

To help keep America’s trucks on the road, EPA recently proposed eliminating Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) engine deratements for newly manufactured vehicles and engines. Instead of reducing vehicle speed when an emissions system issue is detected, the proposal would require visible and audible alerts to notify drivers. If finalized, the proposal is expected to save American truckers up to $12 billion while maintaining emissions standards. 💰

The American West has a rich and surprising automotive history — and a future built for speed.

To keep up with faster vehicles, the state of Colorado completed the "Million Dollar Highway" (modern-day U.S. 550) in 1924 and in 1927 the Mount Evans highway (Mount Blue Sky), which is still the highest continuously paved highway in North America.

The automobile helped open the West to exploration and tourism. In Wyoming, Montana, and North Dakota, cars became a way to experience the beauty of the landscape. Glacier National Park’s famous red “jammer” buses began operating in 1933 and still travel Going-to-the-Sun Road every year. Nearby, Marias Pass on U.S. 2 is the northernmost pass in the U.S. open to cars year-round.

Wyoming's rugged terrain challenged drivers in the Great Auto Race of 1908, when drivers went from New York to Paris. Later, the completion of the first transcontinental automobile road, the Lincoln Highway in 1913, opened the state to a tourism boom as people from all across the country came to view the mountains.

At EPA Region 8, we know automobiles matter to our communities, our economy, and our history. You can read about how EPA is involved with emission standards, import regulations and more at this link🔗➡️ https://www.epa.gov/vehicles-and-engines
