The Office of Emergency Management and Homeland Security (OEM) provides emergency management services to the residents and businesses within the City and County of Denver in coordination with State and Regional partners to reduce the impact of all natural, technological, terrorism, and intentional risks. OEM coordinates emergency management and homeland security efforts across all City and County

departments and offices, Voluntary Organizations Active in Disasters (VOADs), Non-Governmental Organizations, and private sector partners in order to cultivate safe, prepared, and resilient communities. OEM supports the City and County of Denver by providing a common framework for protection of residents and business from all natural, technological, intentional, and terrorism risks. OEM provides services across all phases of the emergency management lifecycle; from preparedness, mitigation, and prevention activities before an emergency to response and recovery operations during and after a multi-agency and/or multi-jurisdictional emergency. OEM manages the City and County of Denver’s multi-agency coordination system, to include the primary, alternate, and mobile Emergency Operations Center (EOC); emergency communications systems; Joint Information Center (JIC) coordination; and Incident Command System (ICS) coordination. OEM coordinates comprehensive, integrated risk management and emergency planning for all types of emergencies and declared disasters. OEM develops organizations for response and recovery; conducts Federal-and State-compliant training and exercise programs; and equips emergency services with surge capability for complex emergencies. OEM coordinates continuity programs across Denver, its departments, and local businesses. The goal of OEM is to bring the right capability to the right place at the right time to meet the needs of the City and County of Denver during an emergency.

Yesterday, Denver's outdoor warning sirens were activated inadvertently.

Following a review of the incident, we determined the activation was not caused by a technology failure or malfunction of the siren system. The activation resulted from human error during the activation process.

Importantly, there was no tornado warning in effect for Denver at the time, and there was no imminent threat to public safety. Because no National Weather Service warning was issued, no Wireless Emergency Alert (WEA) was sent to mobile phones.

City and County of Denver Government takes emergency alerting and resident safety seriously. We have a responsibility to provide timely and accurate warnings, and public trust in our alerting systems is essential. As a result of this review, we are enhancing training and exercises for personnel involved in emergency alerting operations and conducting a review of policies and procedures to help prevent similar incidents in the future.

We appreciate the community's patience and understanding as we continue working to ensure Denver's alert and warning systems remain reliable and effective

A few severe storms will be possible across northeast Colorado this afternoon and evening. Isolated to scattered storms are expected to develop along the I-25 Corridor by mid afternoon and quickly intensify, and then move east across the plains through early evening. Very large hail expected from any severe storms, although some will produce high wind and a threat of tornadoes. Stay weather aware and have multiple ways to receive warnings. If storms approach your area, move your car to a garage if time permits to do so safely.

The threat of large to very large hail is increasing for this afternoon, especially for areas around I-70 from just east of Downtown Denver to the Kansas Border (hail of 3+ inches will be possible). Make sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings and take the necessary safety precautions if a warning is issued for your area!

A Tornado Watch will be in effect for areas primarily east of I-25, excluding some of the northeastern plains counties, through 9PM this evening. Tornadoes, very large hail, and strong winds will all be possible with today’s storms. Please stay weather aware today and have a plan in case a tornado or severe thunderstorm warning is issued!
