SCAM ALERT SATURDAY: GOT GOAT

On June 1, 2022, victims walked into the District 4 Station to file a fraud report. They victims explained that a week earlier, they responded to an ad online for a pygmy goat. Through some email exchanges with the suspect, the victims agreed to buy a goat for $300 and pay for the shipping of the goat, which was an additional $190. Using a digital payment network, the victims sent the suspects $490. The suspect then requested an additional $950 for a special box to ship the goat in. Using the same digital payment network, the victims sent the suspect the $950. After this, the suspect asked for an additional $850 to have the goat examined by a vet and $1500 for life insurance for the goat, which the victims paid for by providing the suspect with gift card redemption codes. On the date that the goat was to be delivered, the suspect requested $5000 for a permit to transport the animal to Colorado. The victims had already purchased a permit and refused to pay the $5000. When the victims arrived at the airport to pick up the goat, it had not been delivered. The victims contacted the suspect, who said they would not send the goat until all the fees were paid. It was at this point that the victims realized they had been scammed.

Similar to the puppy scam, scammers will often spoof websites of actual dog breeders, using their content to lure in victims. One of the most common themes of these scams is the unforeseen requirement of a special crate to ship the animal or added costs for vaccines, paperwork after already agreeing to purchase it or additional shipping charges. This is the scammer's attempt to swindle even more money from their victims. The most sure-fire way to prevent falling victim to a similar scam is to meet the breeder and the animal in person prior to exchanging any funds or placing a deposit. Additionally, if they accept gift card redemption codes as a form of payment, its definitely a scam.

SAFE AND PROUD IN DENVER

In 2017, the Denver Police Department launched the Safe Place program. The program allows DPD to partner with the business community for the purpose of assisting victims of crime, specifically anti-LGBTQ bias-motivated crimes.

A “Safe Place” is a business that will provide shelter to someone who is being harassed, threatened or attacked, especially someone who is a member of the LGBTQ community. Participating businesses receive training on how to help a person in need and a sticker identifying the facility as a Safe Place. Denver is dedicated to being a welcoming city for everyone and this program is part of that effort.

For more information on the program, visit https://goo.gl/tgWiRU.

If you own a business and are interested in becoming a Safe Place, please contact DPD LGBTQ Liaison Lieutenant Michael Wyatt via email at [email protected] or Commander Layla Destaffany at [email protected].

SCAM ALERT SATURDAY: DIGITAL PAYMENT SCAM

On April 30, 2022, a victim walked into the District 3 Station to report a fraud incident. The victim explained that she used a third-party marketplace to advertise a couch and love-seat for sale. A short time later, the victim was contacted by the suspect, who expressed interest in buying the furniture. The suspect offered to pay for the items using a digital payment network and instructed the victim on how to set up a transaction with the preferred service. The victim did as instructed and then the suspect claimed to have sent her $100. The victim began getting emails from what she believed was the digital payment service that stated that the $100 was on hold and that as a new account, she needed to add her own funds in order to fully activate the account. The victim deposited $300 into the account and then received another email that indicated that the transaction was complete. However, the email was riddled with punctuation and spelling errors and the victim became suspicious. She then tried to withdraw the funds from the account only to learn that was fraudulent and the funds were no longer available.

Digital payment network scams are becoming more and more common. If someone wants to pay you for a service or good, and they "guide" you through using a digital payment network, proceed with caution. They may be tricking you into giving them access to your bank account or funds. And the best way to prevent this from occurring, is to only accept cash where you meet the buyer in person.

THOUSANDS OF THANK YOUS!

Shield616 is a non-profit organization on a mission to provide protective gear to every police officer and first responder. Because of them, and lots of generous donors from our community, many of our officers have already been outfitted with this life-saving equipment. Just recently, they partnered with Aaron LaPedis, owner of Fascination Street Art Gallery and Brian Fakharzadeh, to raise $23,254.50 which went towards the purchase of 10 sets of protective gear. That's 10 more of your Denver Police officers equipped with life-saving equipment and we couldn't be more thankful!

HAPPY NATIONAL POLICE WEEK!

To show your appreciation of your local police officers write some thank you notes for local officers to show them appreciation. You can email officers that you know or go the traditional route and send some handwritten notes or cards to police stations. This small gesture can mean a lot to those officers that are out working and feel unappreciated. Have some kids at home looking for something to do? Have them draw some pictures to be included in the notes.
