Wallace Thurman, a journalist, novelist, and playwright, believed in representing the real lives of African Americans through literature and art - both the good and the bad. Thurman was a leading contributor to the Harlem Renaissance, an intellectual and cultural movement in New York City during the 1920s and 1930s that focused on African American dance, art, fashion, literature, music, and more. Thurman was the first African-American reader for a major publishing house and, on this day in 1929, an adaptation of his work “Harlem” debuted on Broadway. The work is now considered groundbreaking due to its focus on many real-life issues that African Americans face.
