Jesus was born in Cuba and currently resides in Denver, Colorado. He works at the African Community Center (ACC).Through his work, Jesus plays a vital role in supporting newcomers as they navigate their transition to a new country. As a public speaker, he hopes to share his journey and inspire others to pursue their goals, no matter the challenges they face.

Jesus was an honored speakers at the Colorado Refugee Speakers Bureau Showcase 2025.

Thank you to Mercy Community Capital for joining us at ACC for a Workplace Volunteer Day. Mercy Community Capital learned more about refugee resettlement in Colorado and packed home goods for families in need of supplies. From sorting supplies to unpacking clothing/ home good donations, their efforts ensure refugee families are welcomed with open arms.

Michael arrived in the United States in November 2024 after spending nearly 25 years living in a refugee camp in Kenya following displacement from South Sudan. Despite this, Michael gained skills and worked as a teacher and community educator, teaching early childhood education and helping the youth learn digital skills for employment opportunities. After resettlement, Michael describes his first year as both a great opportunity but challenging. Navigating the winter weather, public transportation with little family support making integration more difficult. However, with support from the African Community Center, Michael and his brother were able to secure housing, employment, transportation assistance, and guidance as they adapted to life in America. He highlights his case manager, Sarah Valentine, for helping with all their questions and helping them navigate through frustrations. Today, Michael has more independence through employment, obtaining his driver’s license, and purchasing his first car. He hopes people will better understand that refugees are hardworking individuals seeking safety, and the chance to contribute positively to their communities.

Congratulations to the Ready for American Hospitality (RAH) Cohort 39 Graduates!🎓

The RAH program allows refugee students to gain knowledge, skills, and experience working in the food service industry while getting a better understanding of the United States. We are proud of our amazing ACC community members for completing the RAH program at University of Denver.

As always, thank you to Fritz Knoebel School of Hospitality Management and the DU hospitality students for another successful cohort of RAH, and for all your mentorship in this essential integration course!

After spending more than 16 years living in a refugee camp in Zambia after her family fled conflict and abuse in the Democratic Republic of Congo. As the oldest daughter in a family of nine, Natasha had spent much of her childhood helping care for her siblings, supporting her mother’s small business, and navigating the realities of displacement at a very young age. After seeking refuge, she arrived in the United States with her family and began rebuilding their lives. Natasha describes her first months in America as exciting; but nervous too. With the support from the African Community Center and the Match Grant program, she received job readiness support, resume assistance, and direct support in navigating resources. Natasha got her first job working in hospitality and today works as a security guard while continuing to pursue greater stability and independence while aspiring to pursue higher education and marriage for the future.
