As students head back to school, drivers will notice updated school zone signs across Broomfield.

To help keep local kids safe and align with new state traffic safety laws (HB26-1318), the Streets, Traffic Engineering and Community Development Transportation Teams updated signage across all 143 school zone locations in the City and County of Broomfield.

Ahead of the state’s Aug. 12 deadline, crews installed 286 new signs marking the required 200-foot boundaries for schools in Adams 12 Five Star, Boulder Valley, Jeffco Public Schools and local private schools. This prompt effort ensures school zones meet legislative standards while making daily commutes safer for every student in the community.

Please slow down, stay alert in school zones and help keep Broomfield students safe this school year!

Potentially harmful algal blooms have been observed in several Broomfield ponds, including Trails Pond, Sagar Reservoir, Alex and Michaels Pond and East Metzger Pond.

These toxic blooms, caused by cyanobacteria, can look like thick pea soup or spilled bluish-green paint on the water surface and pose a severe danger to dogs.

Residents are advised to keep children and pets out of the water, avoid boating through visible blooms and follow all posted warning signs.

It takes a lot of planning and organizing to host a large annual community event, and that is exactly what has been happening at the Broomfield Open Space Foundation’s monthly meetings. A dedicated team of Foundation volunteers has been meeting with Open Space and Trails staff to discuss event logistics, building relationships with the community, engaging nature-based non-profit organizations and developing communication strategies.

The collaboration doesn’t stop there! More than a dozen nature-loving vendors are scheduled to set up tables and share information about their incredible organizations and the missions that drive them. From setting the date to planning the layout, to packing up the cars at the end of the event, countless hours contributed by staff and volunteers make the whole experience possible!

This year will be the 3rd annual NatureFest event, and each year the volunteers build upon the successes of last year’s event as well as the lessons learned. NatureFest will be held at Metzger Farm Open Space (12080 Lowell Blvd) from 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday, Aug. 15.
