On August 1, a ceremony was held to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the New Mexico Asian Family Center (NMAFC) and the opening of its new office.

NMAFC is a nonprofit organization established in 2006 that provides support for Asian residents in the State of New Mexico who are victims of domestic violence, sexual violence, and various other crimes, as well as social welfare services for residents facing economic hardship.

The ceremony was attended by many members of the Asian community. Consul Narisawa attended and conversed with several NMAFC staff and members of the local Japanese and other Asian communities.

The Consulate-General of Japan in Denver expresses our respect for the important role NMAFC has played for 20 years as a place of support for Asian residents in New Mexico, and we extend our best wishes toward NMAFC’s continued success and development.

Yamagata Prefecture and the State of Colorado, USA, established their sister state partnership in December 1986. This year, they are celebrating the 40th anniversary of this significant relationship. To commemorate the occasion, Governor Mieko Yoshimura of Yamagata, together with an official delegation, made an official visit to Colorado from July 26 to 28, 2026.

During her stay, Governor Yoshimura deepened exchanges with representatives from Sakura Square, Colorado State University, Colorado Nikkeijin Kai, and the Japan America Society of Colorado. On the evening of July 27, a commemorative reception was held at the official residence of Colorado Governor Jared Polis. At the reception, both governors reflected on the wide-ranging exchanges in fields such as education that have developed over the past 40 years, and renewed their commitment to further expanding the partnership in the years to come.

To mark this special occasion, the Consulate-General of Japan in Denver also participated. On July 26, Consul-General Okajima provided an overview of Colorado, and on July 27, delivered congratulatory remarks at the reception.

We look forward to the continued development of the partnership between Yamagata Prefecture and the State of Colorado, and to an even broader range of exchanges in the future.

🏮Running from August 2nd through the 7th, the Aomori Nebuta Festival is one of the “Three Great Summer Festivals” of the Tohoku region. What makes this festival so iconic are its floats featuring tableaus of historical and mythical figures, with the dark of the night helping to make the illuminated floats even more vibrant. While the exact origin of this event is contested amongst historians and scholars, the fun of attending these festivals is never in question! 🏮

On August 2, an annual picnic organized by the Colorado Nikkeijin Kai was held at Berkeley Lake Park. Despite the summer heat, many members of the community gathered to enjoy this beloved tradition, including the ever-popular bon odori dance.

Consul-General Okajima from the Consulate-General of Japan in Denver joined the event and remarked, “It’s a great honor to be part of this picnic, where the Japanese American community passes down its history and culture through the generations. I’d love to hear your stories and memories!”

Special thanks go to President Glenn Tagawa, everyone at the Colorado Japanese Association, and all the volunteers for making this wonderful event possible again this year.

From Thursday, July 23 to Saturday, July 25, the Heart Mountain Wyoming Foundation (HMWF) organized a pilgrimage at the site of the Heart Mountain incarceration camp in Wyoming, where people of Japanese descent were incarcerated during World War II.

Over the course of three days, the pilgrimage featured tours of the exhibitions at the Heart Mountain Interpretive Center, which was established on the camp site, and the camp grounds themselves, alongside various lectures and workshops that highlighted daily life in the camp and the actions taken to defend rights.

Ambassador Shigeo Yamada and Consul-General Hiroyuki Okajima attended the pilgrimage. They toured the site and made exchanges with HMWF members, pilgrims, and local supporters. Ambassador Yamada also delivered remarks at the ceremony on the 25th.

🌊🌴While hotspots like Tokyo and Kyoto are common destinations for foreign visitors to Japan, Okinawa is often overlooked by international tourists. But this tropical archipelago has its own bustling tourist crowd in the summer, and with good reason—glittering waters and beautiful beaches offer numerous idyllic getaways. With so many spots to enjoy, ferries operate at their peak, carrying people beyond Okinawa's main island to less crowded (and sometimes truly remote) islands. Whether it is experiencing Okinawa's unique local culture or luxuriating on the beach, the prefecture offers a wide variety of experiences to enjoy.

There is truly something in Japan for everyone!

On July 24th, the Consulate-General of Japan in Denver held a pre-departure orientation for the outgoing cohort of the 40th Japan Exchange and Teaching (JET) Program. A send-off reception was held after the orientation, hosted by Deputy Consul-General Mika Takayama and attended by alumni and supporters of the Program.

During the orientation, in addition to logistical preparations, the new participants were congratulated on reaching this significant milestone and reminded of the significance of their role, not only as educators and interpreters in Japan, but as grassroots ambassadors who will serve as living examples of cross-cultural exchange.

At the reception, DCG Takayama gave opening remarks, followed by encouraging words from Ms. Jessyca Livingston, Executive Director of the US JET Alumni Association (USJETAA), Ms. Emily Meraqui, a representative from the outgoing JET cohort, and Mr. Brad Breiten, President of the JET Program Alumni Association of the Rocky Mountains (JETAA Rocky Mountain). Participants enjoyed a friendly atmosphere as they mingled and shared their excitement, apprehension, and memories with one another in advance of their imminent departure.

The new JETs departed for Japan the following day (July 25th) smoothly and in high spirits. We look forward to their contributions in Japan, and hearing their stories upon their return!
