SafeHouse Denver is pleased to welcome our new CEO, Sarah Marx Poulain, LMFT.

Sarah steps into her role as a compassionate, service-oriented leader with more than 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector. She is deeply committed to supporting marginalized and underrepresented communities through connected, trauma-informed, and trauma-responsive care and leadership, and brings extensive experience in fundraising, fiscal management, strategic planning, and partnership development. Known for her warm, collaborative spirit, Sarah works effectively with boards, staff, funders, and community stakeholders to advance mission-driven work with integrity and care.

Sarah began her work in the domestic violence field as a therapist in a home-based program supporting families with young children experiencing domestic violence. That early work continues to shape her approach to leadership at SafeHouse Denver—where her focus is on centering safety, dignity, collaboration, and the belief that healing and meaningful change happen in the context of strong relationships and community support.

Welcome, Sarah!

Right now, a survivor in our community is weighing the difficult decision to seek safety. Because of your compassion, survivors do not have to face this moment alone.

Ana’s journey from fear to healing and independence reminds us that survival is just the beginning. With your support, survivors can rebuild their lives, reclaim their voices, and create brighter futures for themselves and their children.

Today, we invite you to read Ana’s full story and help make this transformation possible for more survivors. Every donation will be matched up to $7,000, thanks to the generosity of an anonymous donor.

We are excited to collaborate with Denver Shimmy Mob on Saturday, May 9, for World Belly Dance Day.

This uplifting annual event unites dancers from around the world to stand together and raise awareness and vital funds for survivors of domestic violence. We invite you to join us from the State Capitol to Union Station (or from home!) as we celebrate movement, community, and the strength that comes from showing up for survivors.

WHEN: Saturday, May 9 | 11:00 AM – 3:00 PM

WHERE: Denver State Capitol Building to Union Station | OR participate from home

Every dollar raised will help SafeHouse Denver provide free, trauma-informed services for survivors and their children. Your support ensures that hope and healing remain possible for those who need it most.

If you are unable to join us in person, you can still make a meaningful difference by supporting the fundraiser at https://www.coloradogives.org/story/Shimmymob

We’re excited to share our new book nook with you! Because of The Book Haven Project’s generosity, young adult and adult survivors in our Emergency Shelter now have a cozy corner to rest, reflect, and find hope in the pages of a good book.

The Book Haven Project, led by Lilly, makes a difference by creating “book nooks” and safe spaces in shelters across Denver. If you’d like to bring a book nook to your organization, Lilly would love to help! You can reach her at [email protected].

Check out the photos to see how this space came to life from the “before” through the hands-on process to the finished nook we’re proud of.

We’re deeply grateful to Lilly and The Book Haven Project for the positive changes they bring to survivors in our community.

Today, our team is wearing denim to stand with survivors and honor Denim Day, a global movement that challenges victim-blaming and brings attention to the realities of sexual violence.

Denim Day is a powerful reminder that clothing is never an invitation, and consent must always be freely given. Every survivor deserves to be heard, believed, and supported by a caring community.

Today and every day, we stand together with survivors, offering hope, support, and a path toward healing.
