Colorado Center for Aging

Colorado Center for Aging Colorado Center for Aging is a 501c3 non-profit organization, born out of the roots of Colorado Senior Lobby (CSL). Change that helps in that growth.

The Colorado Center for Aging, formerly known as Colorado Senior Lobby, is committed to raising the voice of older Coloradans in diverse communities across the state. In order to position the organization for the exploding population of our 50+ age group and to enable our growth for the future, the CSL Board of Directors determined it was time for change. We call the change the Colorado Center for Aging.

👏 23 aging advocates of all experience levels gathered at the Capitol for connection, learning, and advocacy at CCA's Learning in Action Day. We connected over breakfast and lunch, discussed priority issues and the long bill (budget), and spoke with legislators about preserving funding for Area Agencies on Aging and the Senior Homestead Tax Exemption. Participants grew their legislative advocacy knowledge and confidence, and elevated the experiences of older Coloradans who rely on these services and funds.

❤️ Thank you to our organizational members for helping make the day a success: Boulder County, A Little Help (ALH), Colorado Gerontological Society, AARP Colorado, and to Next50 for their generous sponsorship of this day and our Advocacy 101 Primer. We're stronger together. 💪

📣 This week, a couple amazing CCA members testified against the proposed SNAP rule change that would ban Coloradans from using food assistance benefits to buy soda and sugary fruit juices.

🥤 Opponents argued, for 7 hours (!), that this rule change has a weak evidence base for behavior change, could harm the dignity and autonomy of low-income older adults, and be unnecessarily difficult to enforce in a time when SNAP is already undergoing administrative changes due to federal cuts.

👏 We're proud of our colleagues for showing up for older Coloradans who use SNAP and protecting the dignity of choice.

💡 Read more about the issue here: https://frac.org/blog/colorados-snap-food-choice-restriction-is-based-on-flawed-evidence-and-a-risky-policy

🌟Proud of these aging advocates, including CCA members, for showing up to protect older and vulnerable Coloradans from fraud and scams.

💰 According to AARP Colorado, rates of financial abuse, exploitation, and fraud/scams targeting vulnerable people are skyrocketing, with Colorado ranking 8th in the nation for reported elder fraud. HB26-1110: Vulnerable Adult Financial Exploitation Banking, will allow additional professionals- banking and credit union staff- to help prevent older Coloradans and vulnerable people from losing their hard-earned money to abusers or scammers.

🛑It gives these professionals the same protections that financial advisors have under a 2017 law to delay and hold possible fraudulent transactions and stop financial exploitation before it happens.

✋CCA members are advocating for the most vulnerable older Coloradans' quality of life this legislative session. You can find us following or testifying at hearings at the Capitol (and virtually) every week.

🗣️Last Thursday, CCA's Secretary and Advocacy Committee Member, Blair Bacon, testified in coalition with other consumer advocate organizations against HB26-1046: Regulate Earned Wage Access Services.

👆While we appreciate the amendments offered to better protect those using these high interest products (like banning tips in these apps), we need to see more to protect consumers (including a growing number of older adults) who regularly rely on these services and can be swept into cycles of debt.

📜The bill passed out of House Finance on a vote of 6-5. We need to continue educating about the harms of this bill, as drafted, as well as changes that we need to see to support this bill, like:

* Lower per transaction caps.
* Capping allowable APR for direct-to-consumer products at 36%.
* Ensuring stronger disclosures, transparency, and public reporting measures.
* Not allowing “gifts, grants, and donations” to fund the regulation of these services, making the process ripe for abuse.

💡 Learn more about the impacts of high interest and fee services and what we can do to protect Coloradans here: https://bellpolicy.org/in-the-know-earned-wage-access-loans-are-a-new-twist-on-an-old-idea/

Colorado Senior Lobby

The Lobby focuses on issues and promotes beneficial legislation, while remaining strictly non-partisan and not supporting any specific political party or candidate.

Colorado Senior Lobby is a place where your voice can be heard. CSL encourages Colorado’s General Assembly, administrators, and state and local agencies to create and enact responsible policies and legislation and establish effective regulations and administrative guidelines that positively affect the quality of life of all Colorado older citizens.

CSL members work to influence change through education of public officials on current issues. CSL monitors legislation and administrative rule development to track and inform the public how legislators vote on bills related to senior issues and how legislation, once passed, is implemented. After the legislative session adjourns, the Senior Scorecard, a record of legislator votes on senior issues is distributed to CSL members and all state legislators.
