It's Media Literacy Week!
What is media literacy?
Media literacy is the ability to access, analyze, evaluate and create media in all its forms, from news articles and social media posts, to images, video and AI-generated content. Media literacy helps people judge what’s credible, recognize bias and misinformation and make informed decisions around the content they consume.
Examples of media literacy include comparing how different outlets cover the same story, checking a viral claim before sharing it, questioning whether an image is AI-generated and differentiating between a news report and opinion.
You can improve media literacy by asking five questions of anything you read, watch or hear: 1. Who made this?
2. Why does it exist?
3. What’s the evidence?
4. What’s missing?
5. Who else is reporting it?
Asked regularly, these questions can help form a healthy practice shaped by curiosity, critical thinking and a healthy dose of skepticism.
