The Aetna Hose Company nor The Depew Fire Department promotes one company over another. However, we will be sure to alert the public when a product fails to do its job and provide the protection it should. Please be sure to check your CO detectors, and replace them if you have one of these faulty units.

The recalled alarms might not go off when carbon monoxide levels become hazardous.

We would like to remind you that as we change our clocks this weekend, be sure to change the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide alarms as well. Smoke and CO alarms save lives.

***PUBLIC ANNOUNCEMENT***
The Depew Fire Department, in conjunction with the New York State Association of Fire Chiefs, will be conducting live fire training at our Northside Fire Station on Saturday and Sunday, between 8:00am and 5:00pm. There will be a NFPA Certified enclosed burn trailer on site, and topics will include fire behavior and flashover awareness. This specific training will help our firefighters recognize extremely dangerous fire environments as well as fire progression inside a structure. This necessary training will help our volunteers more efficiently rescue those in need, as well as recognize dangerous environments that would otherwise result in severe injury or worse to one of our own. Please be advised that there MAY be light smoke in the area at various times. Rest assured that this is critical training for our firefighters, and not a structure in the neighborhood burning. We thank you greatly for your continued cooperation as we do everything we can to enhance our training to help our residents in their time of need.

This is some extremely important information to pass along to our family and friends of The Aetna Hose Company.

Residents and Guests of the Brighton Fire District and other page followers:

Two significant fires have occurred over the past week that have been widely reported. Both have resulted in loss of life that while quantifiable, are in some respects incomprehensible.

On January 5 in Philadelphia, 12 people including 8 children were killed in a rowhouse fire. Two more people are in critical condition. There were four battery-operated smoke detectors in the building and none of them worked, officials said.

On January 10, a fire in a Bronx apartment building killed 17 people including 8 children. 8 people remain hospitalized; 25 injured have been treated and released.

I want to take this opportunity to discuss a few critical safety items and common questions.

First and foremost, have working smoke AND carbon monoxide (CO) detectors in your home. Both types of detectors should be on every floor and in every bedroom. Test their functionality at least twice per year- when you change your clocks, change the batteries. NOTE: just like most pieces of electronic equipment, these devices wear out over time. The average lifespan is *approximately 10 years and the manufacturers date is usually located on the back. Don’t wait to find out that they are past their useful life. Is it beeping and you’re not sure it’s an actual emergency? Get everyone out of the house and call 9-1-1. We don’t care what time it is and you’re not bothering anyone. That’s what we’re here for.

To operate safely, space heaters should be at *least 3 feet from any bedding, curtains, or other cloth material. Avoid using electric space heaters in the bathroom or other areas where they may come in contact with water. *Never* use an extension cord with a space heater and the safest practice is to unplug the heater when you leave the room. If you are considering the purchase of a space heater, make sure it comes with a thermostat and automatic shut-off. Space heaters with the Underwriters Laboratories (UL) mark have been tested for safety and include protective features to lessen the risk of burn and fire hazards.

And the final question I receive with regularity: “should I/kids sleep with the bedroom door closed?” The answer is an unequivocal YES. A properly closed (in the frame and latched) bedroom door can limit the fire’s flow path, reduce room temperatures and keep carbon monoxide levels down. The closed door concept works the other way too- have a fire in a room? Close the door as you exit to limit available oxygen for the fire and reduce the smoke that will be emitted to other areas.

Wishing you and your families a healthy and safe new year.

Aaron J. Hiller, CFO
Fire Chief

In the early days of Depew there was organized what was known as the A.L. Williams Hose Company, named after Albert L. Williams the manager of the Depew Improvement Company. The members of this organization met in the Cleveland House located at the southwest corner of Laverack and Calumet Streets. The officers of this, the first although an independent hose company were: President, George Johnson, Secretary, J.C. Glade and Treasurer, Hugh Matthews.

In November 1895 this group was disbanded and the Aetna Hose Company was organized. The company petitioned the Village Board for the right to organize on August 2, 1895. The first officers of the Aetna Hose Company were: President, Newell McDonald, Foreman, Hugh Matthews and Secretary, Elmer J. Nash

The board of Trustees of the Village of Depew consented to the incorporation of the Aetna Hose Company by resolution on December 9, 1895.
