Friends of Reinstein Woods is a volunteer-led, nonprofit organization that supports the environmental education programs offered by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation at Reinstein Woods -- a nearly 300-acre nature preserve in Depew, NY. We provide vital financial and volunteer support for programs aimed at school children, teachers, youth from underserved neighborhoods, and the gener

al public. We also support stewardship projects designed to protect and restore the natural habitats at Reinstein Woods. Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve is made up of forests, ponds, wetlands. Reinstein Woods is included in the New York State Inclusive Recreation Resource Center's online database, which provides information about physical accessibility and social inclusion of recreation areas, facilities, parks, and programs around New York State. Trails are open to the public daily, year-round, dawn to dusk. The Education Center is open Monday to Friday 9am-4:30pm and Saturday 1-4:30pm. Restrooms are available seven days a week during most daylight hours. Dogs and other pets are not allowed at the nature preserve (except for trained service animals). Reinstein Woods is part of the State Nature and Historic Preserve Trust. Please remember that the following are prohibited in order to protect the preserve's resources:
- Pets and horses, including therapy/comfort animals (trained service dogs and miniature horses are permitted)
- Feeding wildlife
- Taking or releasing plants or animals
- Bikes, skateboards and motorized vehicles on the trails
- Hunting, trapping and fishing
- Firearms
- Boating, canoeing and kayaking
- Alcoholic beverages and glass containers
- Camping and campfires

Congratulations to Kristen Rosenburg as Reinstein Woods’ new Center Director!

I began my career with the Department of Environmental Conservation in August 2000 as a seasonal Environmental Education Assistant at Reinstein Woods Nature Preserve. I grew up in South Cheektowaga about 10 minutes away from Reinstein Woods but had never visited until I accepted the position. I still remember my first visit to the Woods, being amazed at the size of the property, which wasn’t evident from the road front access, as well as the beauty of the forest and ponds. It has been a pleasure to introduce so many visitors over the years to this special “secret place” in Western New York.

The best part of working at Reinstein Woods over the years is that there is always something new to see and learn about. From observing a snapping turtle laying her eggs in a nest (and then seeing baby turtles emerge in the fall from the same nest!), to spotting a fisher in a spruce tree (a life mammal record), to seeing a beaver carrying a kit in her mouth across the trail in the middle of the afternoon.

Please welcome our new Environmental Education Assistant, Emilee!💚

Originally from WNY, I spent most of my childhood hiking, camping, and roaming the woods. I have always loved being outdoors and became an environmental advocate from an early age. I discovered the field of environmental education while finishing my B.S. in Medicinal Chemistry from SUNY at Buffalo. Eager to get outside after spending my days in the lab, I began at Reinstein Woods as a volunteer. I completed my internship here in 2025 and am so grateful to return as an Environmental Education Assistant! My favorite part of working here is creating spaces where everyone can spark a personal lifelong love for nature. I love to explore the ponds, go birding, discuss chemistry in nature, and learn more about the magnificent wildlife here at Reinstein Woods!
