Friends of Reinstein Woods is a volunteer-led, nonprofit organization that supports the environmental education programs offered by the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation at Reinstein Woods -- a nearly 300-acre nature preserve in Depew, NY. We provide vital financial and volunteer support for programs aimed at school children, teachers, youth from underserved neighborhoods, and the gener

Reinstein Woods is included in the New York State Inclusive Recreation Resource Center's online database, which provides information about physical accessibility and social inclusion of recreation areas, facilities, parks, and programs around New York State. Restrooms are available seven days a week during most daylight hours. Dogs and other pets are not allowed at the nature preserve (except for trained service animals). Give a warm welcome to Julie, our Environmental Education Intern!

"As a WNY native, I grew up loving the outdoors and local ecology. You could always find me exploring the woods in my backyard. I recently graduated from Canisius University with a major in Animal Behavior, Ecology, and Conservation (ABEC) and a minor in education. In the spring of 2025, I did an internship with Earth Spirit Educational Services that solidified my love for Environmental Education! I am a firm believer that teaching people about their environment will help them want to protect it, because if they don’t know about their surroundings, they’re less likely to care about it. I love learning new things about the world we live in and am excited to teach others what I learn. You can always find me exploring the trails, so say hi if you see me! I am so ecstatic to be here at Reinstein Woods!"

We are so happy to have her! 💚

On Saturday, June 6, we have a couple of public programs that might catch your eye!

At 9 am, we will be hosting a Morning Forest Bathing. Immerse yourself in the sensations of nature as we take a relaxing walk to promote ease in our minds, bodies, and emotions. This program is for ages 12 and older.

At 10 am, our intern, Tyler, will be leading IDing Invasives. He will teach you about the invasive plant species of Western New York and how to identify them, followed by a walk to test your skills!

To register for either of these programs, please call 716 683-5959 or sign up on Eventbrite! https://www.eventbrite.com/o/reinstein-woods-environmental-education-center-105609420051

Trail update: Some of our trails will be blocked off during May. We are working on resurfacing trails on the west side of the preserve to increase accessibility. The trails at Reinstein Woods were built of slag (an industrial byproduct often used as road base) with crushed gravel placed over it. Over time, the crushed gravel has given way, making an uneven surface that is not easy to walk on.

When this project is done, these trails will have the same surface as the trails near the Education Center/Lily Pond area. Those trails were resurfaced in 2024.

We apologize that the use of the word "pave" was confusing to people. There will be no asphalt used in this project.

West Pond Trail appears to be a muddy, grassy trail, but it was originally the same slag/gravel as the other trails. In the spring, it is not passable for people who use wheelchairs.

Thank you to everyone who came out for I Love My Park Day on May 2! We had over 50 wonderful volunteers come out and steward our trails. We picked up trash, repaired fences, restored paths, and weeded out invasive garlic mustard. We are incredibly grateful for all the work that has been done. 💚

In the past week, the Pathways to Environmental Learning teens have had a couple of fun field trips!

They enjoyed a guided tour , led by Joshua, the Director of Ecology. The teens discovered the fascinating history of the post-industrial site and learned about their remarkable ecological restoration initiatives. 🌱

Next up was , where we met with Maddie, the Operations Manager. They highlighted the importance of sharing tools and resources. One of our favorite initiatives is their Dare to Repair events, where you can bring your broken everyday household items to be fixed by their dedicated volunteers. 🛠️

Most recently, the teens were invited to visit , where we met Neena and the Growing Green Youth Group! The teens were introduced to the amazing work MAP provides, like improving food access and creating opportunities for youth to work and learn meaningful skills. 🍀

All amazing and inspiring organizations are doing impactful work for the WNY community. We are thrilled to bring our community just a little closer together. 💚
