🌊 Curious on how we tow vessels through the challenging 50-foot entrance into the world’s smallest harbor? The weather has been absolutely beautiful—sunny and calm—here on the Oregon Coast, creating ideal conditions for training our newest coxswain in this complex evolution!

📹 In the video, you’ll see us placing the “drill boat” (or disabled vessel) into a short 20-foot stern tow. This technique helps maintain positive control as we navigate the two 90-degree turns leading into the harbor. You’ll also notice a sea drogue attached to the stern of the towed vessel. The drogue provides extra resistance, preventing the vessel from being pushed by waves and significantly reducing the risk of it going over the tow line or colliding with the stern of our 47-foot Motor Lifeboat.

🙌 A big thank you to everyone who captured our training this week! Semper Paratus!

In support of National Safe Boating Week, held from May 17 to 23, the Coast Guard urges all recreational boaters and recreational paddlers throughout the Pacific Northwest to exercise caution and become knowledgeable on water safety in preparation for the 2025 boating season. As the weather improves, and many members of the public return to the water, the Coast Guard reminds all residents that weather conditions remain variable. Many of the accidents on the water can be prevented with simple and effective measures: boaters’ education, life jacket usage, and trip preparation. Education and foresight are the biggest determining factor of safety on the water.

To enjoy a safe day on the water, the Coast Guard recommends the following steps:
•Wear a life jacket.
•Check the weather.
•Wear the appropriate attire.
•Mark your craft.
•Take a Boater Safety Course.
•Get a Vessel Safety Check.
•File a float plan.
•Boat sober.
•Know who to call in an emergency.
•Know your limits.

Stay Tuned this week as Coast Guard Station Depoe Bay shares insight to help you stay safe on the beautiful waters of the PNW!

Earlier this morning, Station Depoe Bay received a call from the F/V SunDad stating they were dead in the water 3 miles off of Cape Foulweather. Shortly after, the 47272 quickly placed the F/V SunDad in tow and brought them down to the Yaquina Bay Bar Entrance. U.S. Coast Guard Station Yaquina Bay took over the tow inbound their harbor. Bravo Zulu to all involved!
