An absolute charter as an association library was granted by the state of New York on April 23, 1929. The Deposit Free Library opened to the public on July 6th of that year. The collection was housed in the two front rooms above Smith’s Drugstore on Front Street. The library outgrew its home and moved to its current location at 159 Front Street in the 1930s. A sum of $3,000 was raised by the Civic

Club to purchase the site. Most of the funding for the building was donated by local benefactor Clark Minor. Minor was a Deposit native and businessman who became a vice president for the International General Electric Company during World War II. Community members also raised funds for construction of the building. It opened to the public on December 18, 1937. The library facility was expanded in 1962 to accommodate a growing collection. Two 18 by 20 foot rooms were added to the back of the original building. These rooms currently house the children’s room and the non-fiction collection. The original rooms now house the fiction collection and computer stations. An additional room offers used books for sale.
