Safety Note: When encountering police officers on a traffic stop especially the ones you do not know, the following is a guide for any citizen to follow.
1. Move your vehicle safely to the right, out of traffic and off the roadway.
2. Always keep your hands visible, preferably on the steering wheel. In low light conditions, you may want to turn on the dome light so the officer can see you and the interior of your vehicle.
3. If your windows are tinted, it is wise to roll them down so the officer can more easily see inside the vehicle.
4. Let the officer know what you are doing before reaching into your pocket, purse, or any compartment. Carefully follow the Officer’s instructions.
5. Remain in the vehicle unless the officer asks you to get out. When exiting your vehicle make sure your hands are visible.
6. Display your driver’s license, registration, and proof of insurance upon the officer’s request, this is a requirement of State of Louisiana Law.
7. Allow the officer to explain why the stop was made, describe the violation and what may occur because of the stop.
8. Remain calm and don’t argue. Remember that signing the citation does not indicate an admission of guilt. You will have an opportunity to state your case in court.
9. Avoid using cell phones or smoking during the traffic stop. Be safe/wise.
