Derby Middle Schools serves a diverse population of approximately 875 students in grades 6 through 8 in a safe and supportive environment. Our school is located in the heart of Derby, KS at the corner of Madison and Woodlawn. In order to prepare students to live in and contribute to a changing world, Derby Middle School prov

ides a progressive education to meet the academic, cultural and social needs of the students in our community. Derby Middle School also has specifically designed instruction for every student’s individual learning needs. We are proud to be a part of Read 180 which is a proven reading intervention program that directly addresses individual needs through differentiated instruction, adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, and direct instruction in reading, writing, and vocabulary skills. There is a strong commitment to a team approach at DMS. There are 2 teams per grade Each team has approximately 130 students. We believe the teaming approach allows teachers to build strong relationships with students and help them to be successful at the middle level. Teaming also allows for teachers to collaborate and review student data to drive their instruction. Parents are able to work closely teachers on the team concerning their child's learning needs. In addition to a rigorous curriculum, DMS provides several electives. Project Lead the Way, a project-based curriculum that focuses on math, science and technology and offers unique opportunities for students to use their knowledge in hands-on experiences. DMS has a proud tradition of excellence in the fine arts. We provide Band, Vocal and Orchestra classes. These music programs consistently score one ratings at festivals and competitions. If students have an interest in Art we have tremendous program in 2D and 3D design. FACS, PE and Foreign Language round out the elective curriculum. DMS believes technology to be vital to the education of students today. We provide computer studies classes and have a one-to-one iPad inititive

Students at DMS will develop leadership skills. They will learn to develop a healthy self-concept, build healthy relationships, and understand the concept of personal responsibility. It’s always a great day to be a Derby Bulldog!

We are incredibly proud to celebrate Angie Alvord on being selected as a recipient of the 2026 Scholarship Award from the Kansas State Department of Education and Educate Kansas!
Angie’s passion for education, commitment to serving Kansas students, and dedication to making a difference truly stood out among an exceptional group of candidates. This well-deserved recognition celebrates her bright future as she prepares to enter one of Kansas' highest-need teaching fields.
Angie will be formally recognized at the Great Ideas in Education Conference on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, alongside fellow scholarship recipients and education leaders from across Kansas.

Join us for our first Parent Academy of the school year on Tuesday, September 8, from 5:30–7:30 PM!
This is a great opportunity to learn more about your child’s middle school experience, connect with teachers, and get important information to help your student have a successful year.

6th Grade: 6:50 PM
🏫 Visit Your Child’s Classrooms
During the rest of the evening, families are encouraged to visit the classrooms of all of their child’s teachers. Take a few minutes to meet teachers, see where your student spends their day, and learn more about what’s happening in each class.
Come for your child’s grade-level meeting, explore the building, meet teachers, and ask questions!

The forecasted heat this week is causing several changes to our upcoming outdoor events.

Tuesday and Thursday's tennis matches at Maize South and Goddard have moved to a 6:00 p.m. start time.

Thursday's cross country meet at Clearwater will now begin at 10:00 a.m.

Thursday afternoon's football game vs. Hutchinson will now begin at 6:00 p.m. Each grade will play 6 minute quarters and there will be no 5th quarters.

Next Tuesday's cross country meet at Valley Point Golf Course has been rescheduled to Friday October 2nd at 3:00 p.m.

KAY Club: Interested in serving others and building leadership skills? Join us for an informational meeting Wednesday after school from 3:30–4:00.

Fall Play Auditions: September 8–9, with callbacks September 10. Auditions are 3:35–4:30 in the auditorium. Actors and stage crew are welcome!

Flag Football: Boys & Girls Club Flag Football is open to all 6th–8th graders. No experience required. Sign up by September 9.
