I posted someone else’s post on this, but I’m reposting because this issue is incredibly important, and a lot of Kansans still don’t know it’s coming.
And I want to be very clear: unaffiliated voters need to show up and vote on this issue. In District 81 alone, roughly 40% of voters are unaffiliated, and your vote matters here.
Here’s why this amendment matters:
In 1956, Kansas experienced one of the biggest political scandals in state history; the “Triple Play.”
Governor Fred Hall lost his primary election, then helped orchestrate a scheme where resignations allowed him to be appointed directly to the Kansas Supreme Court anyway.
Kansans were furious, and they changed the state constitution in 1958 to stop political games from controlling our courts.
Since then, Kansas has used a merit-based system where qualified applicants are reviewed by a nonpartisan commission, governors choose from that list, and voters still decide whether judges stay through retention elections.
Now, in August 2026, voters will decide whether to go back to electing Supreme Court justices.
That sounds democratic until you realize what comes with it: campaign fundraising, political pressure, PAC money, and outside influence on judges who should be focused on the law, not donors.
We changed this system for a reason.
We don’t want judges who can be bought.
Please pay attention to this amendment, talk to your neighbors, and vote.
And if you’re unaffiliated — PLEASE DON’T sit this one out. Your vote could decide this.
