The Derby Police Department arrested Thomas Michel (60) of Derby following an investigation into allegations of animal abuse and threatening behavior.

Officers responded to a report that Michel had allegedly assaulted his dog on O'Sullivan's Island. During the incident, Michel reportedly threatened individuals who attempted to intervene and protect the animal. As a result of the investigation, Michel, a convicted felon, was found to be in possession of handgun ammunition.
Michel was arrested and charged with:
• Cruelty to Animals
• Criminal Possession of Ammunition
• Threatening 2nd Degree
• Breach of Peace

The dog was removed from the situation and appropriate measures were taken to ensure its safety and well-being.

The Derby Police Department takes allegations of animal cruelty seriously and remains committed to protecting animals from abuse and neglect. We encourage residents to report suspected cases of animal cruelty, neglect, or abuse so that they can be promptly investigated.

Today I had the honor of spending time with the men and women of the Derby Police Department during Police Appreciation Week.
These officers show up every single day for the people of our community in good times and in difficult ones. They don’t ask for recognition. They just do the job.
In our home, law enforcement has always been more than a cause, it’s been a way of life.
To every officer serving Seymour, Beacon Falls, and Derby: thank you.
Your sacrifice does not go unnoticed, and I am committed to making sure your voices are heard in Hartford.

🚧 Traffic Advisory – Nightly Road Work on Derby Avenue 🚧
Burns Construction began nightly road work on Derby Avenue between Bank Street and Division Street from 7:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. Crews are installing a new gas line, and this project is anticipated to continue into Fall 2026.

Motorists should expect lane shifts, traffic delays, and the presence of construction personnel and equipment during overnight hours. Please consider using alternate routes when possible.

When traveling through the area, reduce your speed and proceed cautiously through the work zone to ensure the safety of workers and fellow drivers.

Your patience and cooperation are appreciated as this infrastructure improvement project moves forward.
