During the period of the Civil War, Des Arc was a trading hub located on the White River. By the end of the War, Des Arc’s residences had been plundered and destroyed–with very few exceptions. Since the Frith-Plunkett house was used as a hospital during the Civil War, it was spared. It holds the highest honors by being recognized on both the Arkansas Historical Registry and the National Historical
Registry. The Frith-Plunkett house reflects the economic era 1850-1862 and plays an important role in history. Des Arc’s location near the White River allowed this riverside town to prosper in the 1850’s. The Frith-Plunkett house was named after John Frith and William Plunkett, who were very influential during this economic era. Frith built the house and started Des Arc’s first store. He then became a prominent merchant and real estate agent. Plunkett created many successful retail businesses in beautiful Des Arc after the civil war. The Frith-Plunkett house is currently under renovations to preserve its historical demeanor in Des Arc, Arkansas.
