Ray built a legacy in agriculture, transportation, and Iowa. Our state will be forever changed because of his innovation and service. May he rest in peace.

Shocked and heartbroken to hear about the loss of my friend, Ray Gaesser.

Ray was a proud farmer, a tireless advocate for agriculture, a respected leader, and a true champion for sustainability. He cared deeply about Iowa agriculture and the hard-working men and women who make it strong. I was fortunate to know him as a friend and as someone who was always working to make agriculture better.

Jaime and I are keeping his wife, Elaine, their children, Chris and Jenny, and the entire Gaesser family in our prayers during this incredibly difficult time. Ray made a lasting impact on Iowa agriculture and everyone who knew him.

Approximately 70% of Iowa homes test above the EPA action level, making radon a serious health concern for families across the state. Northwest Iowa is among the areas with the highest radon levels, which is why testing your home is so important.

Join Clay County Public Health to learn about the FREE Radon Test Kit Program for Rural Iowans, how to test your home, understand your results, and learn what resources may be available if elevated radon levels are found.

This morning at the Farm Progress Show, I announced some big momentum for water quality in Iowa.

More than 300,000 acres of cover crops have been enrolled in the Greater Des Moines Watershed this fall — nearly triple last year — and statewide cover crop cost-share enrollment has topped 1 million acres for the first time.

We’re also putting an additional $2.1 million toward our Cattle and Conservation Working Lands Program after available funding was fully committed within just 10 days of announcing its expansion during the State Fair.

The response is clear: Iowa farmers want to be part of the solution. We’re going to keep building on this momentum and putting resources behind proven, farmer-led conservation.

Peer support groups in agriculture are so important- this is a great local opportunity to learn, share and grow. 🌱

Northwest Iowa farmers will get a close-up look at data-driven agriculture on Monday, when a Sioux Rapids grower opens his fields to the public for a hands-on look at how numbers are reshaping modern crop management.

Will Jones farms just under 3,000 acres of row crops outside Sioux Rapids, and he’s built his entire operation around gathering and interpreting field data. According to Practical Farmers of Iowa, Jones is now in his third year of planting corn after corn on about 90 percent of his acres — a decision he makes using carbon scores from his soil.

Jones samples soil by pulling cores from zones across his fields, and he supplements that with tissue sampling to see what’s happening inside the plants during the growing season. That information helps him adjust fertilizer plans, evaluate crop stress and make in-season management decisions. He’s experimented with a range of cover crops over the years — triticale, rye, turnips and radishes — and now plants winter camelina as his sole cover crop.

At the field day, attendees will visit fields in Jones’ corn‑on‑corn rotation, look at how winter camelina fits into that system, and see the strip‑till equipment he uses, including Dawn Pluribus and Unverferth Zone‑Builder tools. They’ll also review real data from Jones’ soil and tissue sampling and hear how those numbers have shaped his decisions on fertility, rotation and soil health. A meal will follow the event.

Practical Farmers of Iowa says its field days are designed to help farmers learn directly from one another through demonstrations and open conversation — something Jones hopes will encourage more growers to explore data as a decision-making tool.

The field day is from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at Silo City, located at 4430 U.S. Highway 71 near Sioux Rapids. The event is free and open to the public. Attendees can RSVP online at practicalfarmers.org or by calling Practical Farmers of Iowa at 515‑232‑5661.
