Waveland Park neighborhood is a vibrant and active community in Des Moines, Iowa that has a number of unique architectural, cultural and environmental features. Waveland Park neighborhood is home to mainstream and ethnic/specialty grocery stores, hardware, restaurants and coffee shops, medical and other key community services and retail outlets. It's location in the heart of Des Moines makes the n

eighborhood highly accessible and minutes away from downtown, the airport, and many other amenities. The homes within Waveland Park are bungalows and forsquare homes built in the early 1920's and 1930's with pockets of Tudor Revival homes scattered throughout. Large roof overhangs, well defined front entrance and porches, and often a solarium and sleeping porch can be found on many homes within the area. The neighborhood also has three schools; Perkins Elementary, Hubbell Elementary, and Theodore Roosevelt High School. Other unique features of the neighborhood include the Drake Observatory, the Waveland Park Golf course, and Glendale Cemetery. The combination of all that the neighborhood contains makes this one of the most desirable neighborhoods within Des Moines.

Here's a recap of our June Meeting

Held at the round house on Polk Blvd

1. Officer Trudy again explained how we live in a great, safe neighborhood. She said if you are going on vacation this summer (and anytime you leave for an extended period) to call into dispatch and let them know. (Use the non emergency line: 515.283.4811). The patrol officers will pay attention to your house for anything unusual. Also make sure someone puts your garbage out and back in on garbage day.

2. Melissa and Lindsey, from LifeServe, talked about the upcoming Blood Drive on June 17. Donors will receive a free t-shirt and a gift certificate from a local business. They stressed that they strive to keep donated blood local. It takes about 45 minutes total to do the paperwork and donate blood. Reservations are GREATLY appreciated.

3. Kyle Riley talked to us about the upcoming stormwater replacement project starting next year. After horrific storms in 2019 it was determined our stormwater system was inadequate and needed to be upgraded to process stormwater more efficiently. They are working with Glendale Cemetery and Waveland Golf Course to upgrade ravines and the pond at the gold course to handle the overflow of water. This work is slated for next year. By April of 2028, they will start upgrading the stormwater lines along University Avenue and down the northern sections of 45th, 46th and Polk Blvd. See map. He stressed that the map is a draft and there is room for changes depending on many factors, our stately trees being one concern. At this point they are assessing what lines can be upgraded, replaced or abandoned. Lots of moving parts and concerns. He did say the new budget cuts to the city will not affect this project.

4. Waveland Park Board president, Todd Snell, updated us on:
- Polk Blvd traffic study. The study showed the threshold needed to put mitigating efforts was not met, so they will, instead, recommend changing the speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph. That recommendation will go before the city council at their next meeting.
- Twilight Run is this coming Friday! This is our third year. You can run or walk, 9 or 18 holes. Preregister (on our website) or show up the day of. Good times!
- PorchFest will be September 27. We’ll be using the same block of 44th St as we did last year and adding 45th St. We have 16 bands confirmed. More good times!
- In lieu of the city’s impending budget cuts the attendance at the last meeting in support of the libraries was truly heartwarming. Even though there were no decisions made, the public voiced their support of our public libraries. Another budget meeting is scheduled for June 17 at 7:30 AM. Let’s keep showing up!
- The new playground is open at Grey’s Lake.
- Friends of Des Moines golfing event at Waveland GC is scheduled for June 12.
- Stage 3 watering ban is in effect for lawn watering. We have to put a pause on lawn watering to preserve our access to drinking water.
- InvestDSM is exiting the Waveland Park/Franklin area. Late summer is the chance to take advantage of their program to make any home improvement projects.

5. Diane Graham spoke to us about Greenwood Park Pond since the art project was disassembled and removed. She has obtained funding to finance a bridge to allow a complete path around the pond. They are looking to finance potentially paving this path. It would connect Sylvan Amphitheatre, too. Construction on the bridge could start as soon as spring 2027.
