Memorial Day is more than the start of summer. It is a day to remember those who never made it home.

Today, the Des Moines Police Department honors the men and women of our Armed Forces who gave their lives in service to this country. Behind every name is a family, a story, and a sacrifice that will never be forgotten.

As we spend time with family and friends this weekend, we pause to reflect on the freedoms we enjoy because others were willing to give everything for them.

We remember the fallen.
We honor their sacrifice.
And we remain forever grateful.

Brenda, we are truly touched to be included in your unique project. Our neighbors at the Federal Way Police Department also received their own special rock!๐Ÿš“๐Ÿ’™
We are finding a special spot outside our doors for the public to admire your work. Thank you for supporting local law enforcement!

Peace Officers Memorial Day

Today, May 15, 2026, we pause to remember.

Peace Officers Memorial Day is a time to honor the law enforcement officers who lost their lives in the line of duty. In 1962, President John F. Kennedy signed a proclamation designating May 15 as Peace Officers Memorial Day and the week it falls in as National Police Week.

Here in Des Moines, flags will be flown at half-staff, and your officers will wear mourning bands to honor the fallen and recognize their sacrifice.

โ€œWe will remember not only those who have died in the line of duty, but also those who continue to serve.โ€

We remember not just the loss, but the impact left behindโ€”the families, friends, and communities who continue forward without them.

At the Des Moines Police Department, we take this moment to reflect and honor those who gave everything in service to others.

They will not be forgotten.
