Where will new residents live? How will our neighborhoods keep their character while new homes and businesses are built? How should the City encourage new development and where? The City is beginning a process to determine the answers to these questions and more with the development of a new comprehensive plan which is a policy guiding document for land use and community wide development. The City
wants your input as it makes plans for the future. Comprehensive plans guide decisions on allocation of resources, development of new infrastructure and review of development proposals. The City’s new plan, Plan DSM - Creating Our Tomorrow, will replace the existing 2020 Community Character Plan. Much has happened since then: continued population growth, new technologies, sustainability standards, national recognition for the excellent quality of life we enjoy and a growing business sector with new jobs. Building on this momentum and regional planning efforts including “The Tomorrow Plan” and “Capital Crossroads,” it is time to create a new vision of the future Des Moines.
