On Monday, August 17, 2026, Central Iowa Veterans and staff represented the Veterans Health Administration Central Iowa Health Care System (VHACIHCS) by participating in Veterans Day at the Iowa State Fair. This year, in honor of the 250th anniversary, more Veterans than previous years participated by walking or riding in a van. A total of 24 Veterans attended the fair, and 11 staff assisted. Veterans expressed gratitude for being able to attend and felt honored as they received claps and cheers along the parade route. Many Veterans said they are already looking forward to next year! Thank you, Iowa State Fair, for honoring our Veterans in such a meaningful way!

VA Central Iowa's Electronic Health Record Modernization (EHRM) Deployment Kick Off Picnics continued with three fantastic events at Main Campus, Carroll, and Mason City. Thank you to everyone who stopped by to enjoy a meal, ask questions, pick up EHRM information, and connect with colleagues. These gatherings continue to be one of our favorite opportunities to celebrate the journey together, spark conversations, and remind ourselves that while we’re building a new electronic health record, we’re also building relationships, confidence, and excitement for what’s ahead to better serve our Veterans.

Last week VHACIHCS had the honor of hosting Deputy Secretary Paul R. Lawrence, PhD.

Dr. Lawrence met with leadership and staff members to discuss the new Federal Electronic Health Records (EHR) system which is scheduled to 'Go Live' in July of 2027. These discussions provided support, resources, and answers to questions so we can ensure the smoothest transition for our Veterans. VHACIHCS has chosen a building block theme and is also hosting 'block parties' throughout the month to kick off the transition. Ultimately, the EHRM rollout will streamline Veterans records between DOW and the VA and will shorten the amount of time providers spend on records to increase the face-to-face time with Veterans.
