We are looking forward to the Johnson County Sheriff's Office (JCSO) attendance at our Iowa Walk for Epilepsy - Iowa City on 6/6! Detective Sergeant Schuerer, Crisis Response Canine Rudy, and Public Safety & Justice Public Information Officer Silver plan to be in attendance. Stop by to see them about the JCSO Emergency Responder Sticker Program. This is a completely free service that’s offered to every Johnson County resident. These stickers can be placed on your car window or home window to let our deputies, firefighters, and EMS crews know that an occupant inside has Epilepsy or a Seizure Disorder and may not respond to verbal commands in a typical way. The next live virtual training for the Law Enforcement Informed Training on Recognizing and Responding to Seizures is on Wednesday, May 20, at 9 am CT. This free, virtual session will teach law enforcement officers how to identify seizures, administer first aid, and ensure the safety of individuals with epilepsy during public safety encounters. We were in Washington D.C. this week for the Epilepsy Foundation of America 2026 Public Policy Institute! Iowa's delegation included Epilepsy Advocacy Champions Staci Wedel, Joel Streif and Tasha Whye. We met with the offices of Congresswoman Ashley Hinson, Rep. Randy Feenstra, Congressman Zach Nunn, Rep. Miller-Meeks, Senator Chuck Grassley and Senator Joni Ernst to discuss the National Plan for Epilepsy Act, the Congressional Epilepsy Caucus, FY27 funding for the CDC's Epilepsy Program, VA Epilepsy Centers of Excellence and Epilepsy Research at the NIH, BRAIN Initiative, and CDMRP!
