About two weeks ago, we admitted this beautiful young Sora.

Most people have never heard of—or seen—these secretive marsh birds. We most often encounter them during migration, typically after window collisions.

Thankfully, this little bird only needed a couple of quiet days of rest and supportive care before she was ready to return to the wild.

We carefully selected a peaceful release site. When we arrived, just one other person was there: a wildlife photographer capturing images of local birds that morning.

After a brief chat, we released the Sora. He captured this gorgeous photo just before she disappeared safely into the bushes.

Thank you Anders Pagh Thomsen for such a nice shot!

Check out his story about the Sora and other birds he's photographed at:

Thank you for helping us give birds like her a second chance 🐦🧡

Sweet tooth?

This little one gets a special Hummingbird diet, but sometimes she also gets a sugar water treat 😊

Enjoy watching this baby take some sips. As she grows older, her beak will get longer.

We spy a killdeer nest. Can you? 😁

Breakfast time!

Just a little Broad-winged hawk cuteness for your Thursday afternoon 😍

These 2 were admitted separately yesterday afternoon, and will be headed to SOAR - Saving Our Avian Resources tomorrow. For now, we get to enjoy their fluffy, round heads ☺️

Final thank you to the incredible people who make everything we do possible—our volunteers!

Des Moines Arts Festival is one of our favorite ways to connect with the community, but it’s a three-day event that doubles our usual volunteer needs. While many of our volunteers are engaging with the public at the festival, others are stepping up behind the scenes to ensure birds continue to receive the care and transport they need.

Today, we’re celebrating our IBR volunteers for showing up, stepping up, and giving so much of themselves. Your dedication lifts this organization, strengthens our community, and quite literally helps birds take flight again.

We truly couldn’t do this without you.

And a very special thank you to Kiwi the kestrel and Gigi the Screech owl for making 2 guest appearances 😊

What an incredible weekend!

Thank you to everyone who stopped by to visit us, and to the Des Moines Arts Festival for selecting us as one of this year’s nonprofit partners—our fifth year in a row.

We always look forward to opportunities like this: meeting new members of our community, reconnecting with familiar faces, and sharing the work that drives our mission forward.

This year’s project, Every Print Leaves a Legacy, invited visitors of all ages to create bird art using their fingerprints—and it was so much fun to see so many people take part.

We’re grateful for your support and can’t wait to see you again next year. 🐦🧡
