Over 32,000 older Iowans, or 4.3%, were still found to be living with food insecurity in 2021 despite expansion of nutrition assistance programs during the pandemic based on this recent report released by Feeding America (The State of Senior Hunger in America in 2021). Those experiencing higher rates of food insecurity include older adults with lower incomes, Black and Hispanic older adults, older adults aged 60-69 years, older adults living in multigenerational households, households with someone with a disability, older adults who live alone and older adults who are renters. Nationwide, the prevalence of food insecurity increased significantly among older adults living alone from 2020 to 2021 (from 8.3% to 9.5%) as did the prevalence of very low food security (from 3.4% to 4.5%) according to the USDA Economic Research Service.

This report explores the issue of senior hunger and food insecurity in the United States. It examines the causes and consequences of this issue.

Older LGBTQ+ people should be able to access inclusive, welcoming and culturally competent services in long-term care communities, free from discrimination. To help make this a reality, the Long-Term Care Equality Index (LEI) is a valuable tool that will help long-term care communities adopt policies and practices necessary to provide culturally competent and responsive care for older LGBTQ+ people.
